A number of children participated in the children's programs this year, and they look forward to a busy. fall. Regular children's program for children ages 4-7 begin October 1 at 2:30 *p.m. Programs include stories and crafts. Aspiring writers will be interested to know 'that the Dorothy Shoemaker contest From up here by Shelley McPhee It defies logic, science and education. There is no sufficient evidence to support it. Yet it has affected the most intelligent and sophisticated .along with the most primitive and ignorant. . Yet most people hate to admit that they're super- stitious. Although the degree of superstitiousness may differ, from the truly obsessed to the hypocritical "none 'believers", almost everyone has a grain of superstition. Many try to get out on the right side,of the bed. Sup- posedly getting out on the right side, opposed to the wrong side, will let you be good tempered for the rest of day. But what happens if your bed is against the wall and you can only get out of the left side, like mine is? I sup- pose that now I'm doomed. To rectify the problem of having a wrong sided bed I could bring myself good luck by taking a piece of cotton . from someone's dress or coat, but I wonder how many enemies I'd make by snipping out pieces of their clothes. Superstitions are also full of little household hints. It is said that if you leave crumbs on the table instead of feeding them to the birds, you're asking for trouble. That seems true enough, since I can recall the times my mother was upset at me for leaving the kitchen table in a mess. Or how about this one - if you leave an empty eggshell in a cup without breaking it or turning it upside down, witches will use it as a ferry -boat. I have yet to see a witch sailing through glass or orangejuice in an eggshell. Superstitions, black magic and all those unexplained beliefs have been used through the centuries as , medicinal cures. One home remedy for the hiccoughs says that one should spit on their forefinger of the right hand, cross it in front of the left shoe three times and say the Lord's Prayer backwards. After this complicated procedure one deserves to lose his hiccoughs. Have a toothache? -Forget about the dentist and instead put a piece of elder in your month, then stick it to the wall and say.:; "Depart, thou evil spirit." Warts must have been a popular ailment, or else none pf the many cures werk %4)kisk e eel's blood, or rubbing them with two halves ,ai.apple then throwing the halves away so no one el gets, warts, or pricking the wart through a wedding ring with a gooseberry thorn. But of course, these superstitions mean nothing to me, they are only interesting to read and hear. Especially since I was reading my cards when I pulled up a Queen of spades, which means, a dark malicious woman, perhaps a widow. Then I turned up a seven of diamonds which supposedly means a scandal and unpleasant business affairls. Bah, humbug. ALL LADIES' BLOUSES ' AND SWEATERS NOW for poetry and prose closes October 1. I'm anxious to get some kind of proof that I am a Canadian, and also I was wondering if my place of birth has any effect on the nationality of our children. In our 'opinion the fact that you were born in the U.S.A. means that you are an American citizen, but the people to see for help with this matter are to be found in the COURT OF , CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP at 457 Rich- mond Street in London, On- tario. If you wish to phone for an appointment their number is 679-4334. Regarding your children, they are NOT affected by your place of birth and are all Canadians. T. I asked my doctor about, this firm but he had never heard of them. Have you? Yes, and after making some enquiries we have not come up with- anything detrimental in fact we have found out that they have been favourably quoted in the Ann Landers column, plus several national publicaions. They say they would very much like to send a counsellor to your home to examine your child and try to determine if they feel they can be of help or not. This examination is made without charge or obligation and they claim they have no objections to your doctor being present. LTD. HOME FURNISHINGS in FLOOR COVERINGS CARPETING NOME FURNISHINGS
