The problem is not the decrease, but the distribution. • Last year, there were 2,990 children enrolled in the system; this year there are 2,829. The 5.4 per cent drop is not what concerned trustees at the September 12 meeting of the board in Dublin, but•the fact that if didn't occur evenly throughout the schools. The major problem centres around the schools of St. Patrick's in Dublin, which is overcrowded, and St. Columban, a short distance from Dublin which is ex- periencing a considerable loss of students. Trustee Ronald Marcy said "We must distribute the children so that full ad- vantage clan be made of each school." According to Marcy, the learning environment is hampered by the over- crowding situation and there may have to be boundary changes made to ease this problem. Hensall awards contract for arena The contract for con- struction of Hensall's new arena and communit Z centre JAhas been awarded to Logan Construction of Stratford. Estimated cost now stands at $694,000 - somewhat higher than the very early estimate of $600,000. Final cost will likely be influenced by the com- munity's choice of options. C.C. Parker and Associates of London are .engineering consultants. i, A sod -turning ceremony was held last Thursday. The site is now ready for con- struction to begin. The new building will seat 470. With standing room, it will accommodate a crowd of between 500 and 600. One of its special features is a raised heated viewing area with access by ramp for people in wheel -chairs or unable to.'clim'b stairs. Upstairs there will be a small aduitorium seating about 80. It will be used for meetings, such" as those of the Clinton police report Aline I. Deveber, 49, of 815 Talbot St., London was charged with passing on the right as the result of a collision with a car driven by John Shanahan, 28, of 142 Joseph St., Clinton on Sep- tember 4. Both vehicles were south- bound on Victoria Street at the speed of 20 mph when the Deveber vehicle tried to pass the .Shanahan vehicle of the right side. The Shanahan w vehicle tried to pull in front of Deveber's car and the two met in a collision. Damages of $450 were received to the rear left and centre of the Deveber car and $180 in damages was received by the Shanahan vehicle. I Viola A. Riley of RR 4, Clinton received damages of • $400 to the car she was driving when she was in collision with a car tran- sporter driven by Bruce Kennedy of Atwood. • • e The accident, on September 9, occurred when both vehicles were eastbound on Highway 8 and the trailer was attempting to pass the Riley vehicle. At •.that time, the Riley vehicle was trying to make a left hand turn when the front of the car caught the rear corner of the trailer as it was passing. No damage was sustained to the trailer and no injuries were suffered. The Clinton Police are also investigating a theft under $200 which occurred at the Clinton races last Sunday. Mrs. Edward Matheson of St. Marys reported to the police that two $50 and five $20 were stolen from her husband's car while- it was parked at Brownie's Drive -In when he attended the races. She explained that the money had been left on the pocket of his coat and lockea into nis Ford Ltd. The coat 'was not taken. m (1)) PIONEI- MODEL SA 750011 INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER Music's Price $235. Besides washrooms, the building will have showers and dressing rooms. It is hoped that liquor licenses can be obtained for both halls. The administration reminded the board that this is a problem facing nearly every school board in the province and it won't be solved overnight. An upcoming conference to be held in Toronto has designed its program around declining enrolments. Trustee Ronald Murray suggested that rllembers of the hoard ' attending that conference report back on the outcome of discussions raised there. "We"ve got to do something this 'year so. this won't get worse, next year,. even if it means trucking some students presently attending Duplin to St. Columban," Superintendent of Business and Finance, Jack Lane, reminded the hoard that boundary busing changes would cause reaction from some parents. "It may appear easy to resolve but busing is a touchy thing to change. Sonie kids get on the bus early enough as it is," Lane said. rilizehrs fine markets... of fine foods SOMETHING NEW!
