the court room where he had
presided for many years.
Judge F.G. Carter ex-
pressed his regret and sorrow
at the passing of Judge Hays,
a man, he said from whom he
had learned a lot. He spoke of
N► his senseof humor and also of
his contributions to various
historical societies
throughout the county.

man of great understanding
who will be greatly miissed.

the Huron County Bar

Hays' devotion and com-
passion. He said he would be
a great loss to the bar.
Lawyer Dan Murphy also
spoke of Judge Hays' com-
passion for people. He said
that when a man appeared
before him without counsel,
he would take extra time to
make sure that man un-
derstood the charges and
court procedures.
Lawyer Paul Rivers spoke
of the time, effort and un-
derstanding with which
Judge Hays looked into
matters.
Norman Pickell of the
Donnelly and Murphy law
firm also spoke of his respect
for Judge Hays.

recent eighth . Annual
Meeting, held in Board Room,
Ministry of Agriculture &

was re-elected president and
.E. Goodin, Oakville,
continues as secretary -
treasurer. New directors to
the Council are, Bob Stovel,
Mitchell, replacing W.J.
Rider, Ariss; and Frank
Bickle, Woodstock, replacing
Roy Facey, Bright.
E.L. Chudleigh was elected
as representative O.F.V.G.A.
and Frank Vanneste, Clan-
deboye, as representative to
the provincial research
committee. Janes Rennie,
West Hill, will continue as
auditor.
The Council was organized
with constitution and charter
granted in 1969. Net value to
growers for 1976-77 export
shipping season was
$4,121,774.10, to establish a
record year for total value. In
addition, there was a sub-
stantial increase in domestic
sales.

The fastest divison was taken

R. Bodi of Montreal. R.B. Jet
has won ten of his eleven
starts this year for earnings
of over $63,000.
The other division went
to Garry Carruthers, also a
son of Armbro Jet. He was
timed in 2:10 with driver
Dave Shewfelt for owner
Elliott L. Carruthers of
Ripley. Both races had a
purse of over $6,400.
Sunday, September 18 will
be "Mens Day" at Clinton
Raceway, with free ad-
mission for all men. There
will be a draw for a $100 gift
certificate from Herman's
Men's Wear, Clinton. Free
tickets were given away on
September 11 for this draw to
all men attending on that day.
Qualifying r'aces will be held
at 12:30 p.m. with post time at
1:30 p.m.
At Mohawk on September 6,

Meriam. Janet Express.was a
wjinner of the tenth -in 2:08.4.
She is owned 'by Beryl and
.Bob Faulds of Clinton, with
the latter driving.
Monday night at Elmira,
Adorable Luck had her first
lifetime win in 2:10.1 with
driver Dennis Jewitt up for
Larry Baird of Hensall.
Jeffrey Hi finished fifth for
owner Dale Kennedy of
Seaforth. Joanna Dale was
third with her owner -trainer -
driver Verdun Vanstone in
the second.
Horses trained and driven
by Bill Rapson of Holmesville
all managed to come home
with a cheque. He was fifth
with Flame Messenger for his
mother Evelyn. Senate
Leader finished third in a
2:05.3 miles, while Chief
Noble was fifth in a 2:08 anile.
Gord Rapson is the owner of
the latter two horses.
Jimmy Archer, 16, the. son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Archer of Clinton was chosen as
goaltender to play on the all Ontario Floor Hockey team which played at the Special
Olympics in Oakville recently. The team, called the Toronto Maple Leafs and sponsored
by the NHL Players Association, won all their games at the meet which was held on
August 26 and 27. The Maple Leafs won a gold medal at the games. Jimmy also played for
a Palmerston team at the Ontario finals held in Etobicoke earlier this summer. ThP team

Driver receives $300 fine
David Jervis, 25, ' of RR 2
Seaforth. received a fine of
$300. for a dangerous driving
cha rge that resulted in $12,000
in property damage.
Provincial court Judge
Glenn Hays (now deceased)
heard the guilty plea from
Jervis in Clinton court
Wednesday as the result of a
May 14 accident at the in-
tersection of Victoria and
Albert Streets in Clinton.
Jervis was coming from the
Clinton Hotel when he ac-
celerated near the stop lights
and lost control of the Cor-
vette he was driving. The car
hit a truck that was stopped
at the lights, spun round,
knocked over a traffic pole
and rested against the wall of
a building, now J and S
Janitorial Ser -vices.
Judge Hays noted in the
court that he .would not
suspend Jervis' drivers'
licence since it was fun-
damental to his business as a
car dealer.
In other cases, Steven
Carmann, 18, of 95 Toronto
Street in Goderich was asked
to pay the amount of $27 to
CHSS after an earlier in-
cident.. -.where he broke the
glass in the high school door.
While at school dance on
January ' 21, Carmann was'
. being kicked out of the school
for drinking, while being put
out he kicked the door in.
Follow ing court, Carmann
was to receive a police escort
to the Board of Education
office to pay for the damages,.
then return with•the receipt.
Ross A. Cudmore, 38, of RR
5 Clinton pleaded guilty to
charges of unlawfully having
migatory birds in his
possession without a permit.
Constable Tousignant from
the Stratford detachment of
the RCMP told Judge Hays
that Cudmore failed to file his
annual report and failed to
renew his permit for his
birds. He has eight Canada
Geese and 13 ducks on his
property.
Cudmore noted that he had
recently filed his report and
will have his permit renewed.
Judge Hays fined Cudmore
$25 or two days in jail.
Murray Bolger, 17; of RR 5,
Clinton was tinea z)b4 or five
days in jail resulting , in
charges on having liquor
while being under 18 years of
age. Bolger pleaded guilty to
the July 30 incident when
there was beer in the car he
was driving.
A fine of $43 or five days • in
jail was given to Mike Ansett,
22, of 55 Mill Street following
'a charge of making an im-
proper U-turn.
On July 10 Anstett made a
U-turn near the crest of a
,.grade 'on Albert and Mill
Street. While attempting to
make the turn he hit a PUC
post on the west side. Con-
siderable damage was done
to the car he was driving.
John Shanahan was given
14 days in jail and had his
licence suspended - for six
months following a impaired
driving charge which occured
on May 22.
Richard Harcourt was
fined $54 for having an open
liquor on July 14.
John Maclntyre was
charged $78 following an
unnecessary noise charge
which was given on August 5.
McIntyre did not appear in
court and evidence in his trial
was given ex parti.
Leslie Babinsky was fined
$13 as the result of a speeding
charge which occured on July

Rebekahs hold ,pot luck supper
Huronic Rebekah Lodge
306 held their pot luck supper
Wednesday, September 7 'in
the Lodge Hall.

A former Exeter man and
editor of the Clinton News -
Record, Bob Beavers, has
become a major shareholder
in the Peterborough Review.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Reg Beavers, Exeter.
A graduate of the
University of Western
Ontario, Beavers will he the
editor of the weekly
publication, which is the
oldest newspaper in Peter-
borough.
He has been in the Peter-
borough area since 1970, and
is currently secretary of the
Kinsmen Club and a member
of the Chamber of Commerce
special events and public
relations committee.
