Stuart and Emma Beatty of Wingham were guests of Bill and Eleanor McAsh for a few . days last week, and were present when the McAsh's entertained a number of friends and relatives at a cern ..and weiner roast. Tom and Barbara Consitt were hosts to many friends at a beef barbecue on Saturday night, Several hilariously funny games were 'played, involving everyone present in At least one game. David Rathwell, baby son of Don and Debbie won third prize in the six to twelve moth gliclass at Bayfield Fair's baby shpw. Mr. and Mrs. Gary McAsh and family of London camped at his parents farm for the weekend, and visited with relatives in the area. Mr. and Mrs. Murvin Johnston and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Keys holidayed in Ottawa for a few days last week. !ik Several students from this area are returning to post- secondary schools Cheryl and Linda Webster will enter their third and .second year respectively at Huron College, Western University. Cheryl returned early .Friday morning from Biere Switzerland. Terry Heard will be in Year 2 of Building Technology at FanshaWe, and Sylvia Wilson is entering the four-year Pharmacology course at Western. UCW hears speaker Don Campbell, South Huron Director of the Mentally etarded, and Executive Director of ARC Industries Dashwood, was the guest speaker at the September 4 meeting of Varna UCW. This young man is obviously deeply dedicated to helping the mentally and physically handicapped to become useful and happy citizens. He told us that many of the people who work at k ARC Industries, have excellent production records, often * doing tedious jobs much better than most employees in other industries,. Visitors are surprised to see them skilfu. fir, using power • • machinery. To date they have had no accidents, probably because they concentrate on their work, with little or no daydreaming. A residence close to the factory would be a big asset to the employees, as some of them ride long distances each day on a bu's. They are now producing many picnic tables (and are unable to keep up Nr with th,e demand) and may fish '.boxes, a few ceramics, string art, etc., as well as doing contract jobs and en- velope stuffing. Many of the people who . are trained at ARC Industries hope to get jobs in regular industry, but it is difficult to place them at a time of high unemployment. The necessary amount of- government fgovernment funding is hard to get, especially for residences for small groups 'of people. Much help is needed from the people of Huron County, and the Flowers of Hope campaign provides one opportunity to help people of all ages who need more assistance than the average person to become useful members of society. Mr. Campbell said there are quite a number of ap- plicants who hope to be ac- cepted for training at Dash- wood. Space and money are the main problems that have to be overcome. During the business meeting, it was decided to have the annual UCW Smorgasbord Supper on Wednesday October 5, with the price to remain the same as last year. Church News ,Varna United Church anniversary services are to be held on September 18, with Rev. 'Grant Mills, former president of London Con- ference, as the guest preacher. A group from Exeter will provide special music, and will present a concert at 7:30 in the evening. In men's ' Slowpitch playoffs, Varna defeated the Old Homestead team by a 16 to 13 score on Saturday night. Sunday night they lost to Paul Bunyon camp, who are winners of the series.. News of Brucefield by Mrs. H.F. Berry Mr. and Mrs. Dick Roorda, Carol, David, Robert and children and Kathy Mustard spent a few days in Toronto attending the CNE.
