Through the other weeklies
The Perth County Board of
education feels that they have
been insulted by a letter they
received from the Periodical
Distributors of Canada.
The St. Marys Journal -
Argus explained that the four
page letter, which was sent, to
° all boards of.. education,
concerns public views on the
availability of pornography
and obscene literature.
Trustee Rev, Michael
Griffen explained that' the
letter was offensive to any
board, especially the section
that read these matters
should be dealt with by the
courts and that vigilante -type
action by individuals may be
dangerous and not a press
the Canadian public opinion.
Griffen considered that
statement an accusation,
saying that those who are
attempting to ensure the
moral environment of their
children are now considered
vigilantes.
The board decided to reply
to the letter, stating its
disapprovals to the points
made.
The former home of Issac
Carling, built in 1856 will soon
be demolished to make way
for an addition to the South
Huron Hospital.
The Exeter Times -
Advocate reported that the
decision came after almost
six years of waiting for
government assistance, but
now the hospital board have
decided to go alone with the
$500,000 addition. The board
finally made the decision
since there was a need to'
update facilities and the
. Carling home is deteriorating
quickly.
The home, which was used
for administration purposes
is literally falling down,
mortar is falling out between
the bricks, the large front
verandah is being supported
by two jacks and the house is
too hard to heat.
In 1976, the provincial
government informed the
board that approximately
$1,000,000 would be given for
the addition, •but the board
was -given no indication when
the funds would be available.
Instead, they decided to go on
with the addition themselves,
which will be half the size
originally intended.
Hungry thieves are striking
Exeter area fields. One
Hensall farmer recently
reported that over 300 dozen
ears of sweet corn were stolen
from his farm.
The corn, valued at $320,
was picked sometime during
the night at the farm of
William B. Rowcliffe,
'reported the Times.
A Stephen Township far-
mer was also the victim of -a
crop robbery. Gerald Dearing
won't be getting any high
yields from his crop of mixed
grain since wild ducks have
been feeding on the grain.
The 20 acre field has seen
some 200 bushels of grain,
especially barley, eaten by
the some 500 ducks who live
on a nearby lagoon.
From the front page to the
back, the Zurich Citizens'
News featured beans in last
week's paper. The stories
„pictures and 'advertisements
were all part of the
preparation for the village's
annual bean festival which
was held last 'Saturday
August 12.
Elsewhere in the News,
another taste treat was
reported on in a feature about
Ross and Marguerite
Johnston's Pie -Tart Shop
near St. Joseph.
The couple, who live on
highway 21, opened the
pastry shop in 1970 after they
decided to change the
breezeway in their
retirement home.
Previously the couple used
to live in Zurich where they
ran the Dominion Hotel.
Their cuisine was so fine that
diners from across Canada
ate there and reservations
were made days ahead of
time. In August 1970, their
last month at the Hotel, they
served some 8,000 people.
However, the couple could
not draw themselves away
from the life of cooking and
now they serve many
satisfied customers with
homemade pies. Recently
