The last of the summer
::om munity church services
was held on Sunday at the
Hensall_ jenited Church with
Rev.Ion Beck in charge.
His sermon was titled "A
Paradox" and dwelt on our
personal belief in Christ,
which calls for a personal
decision and personal•
dedication even though it
may involve a struggle also.
Music was provided by
Mrs. John Turkheim at the
organ and a solo by Mrs. Eric
Luther, accompanied on the,
piano by her husband.
Unit 4 will be starting their
fall season of meetings on
Thursday, September 1 with a
pot luck luncheon at 12 noon.
Congratulations to Rene
Boogemans of Hensall and
Xavier Boogemans of Grand
Bend who won the expert
class for canoeists at the
Ontario S'i'mmer Games at
Guelph on Sunday.
Word has been received
that Gary Merritt, son-in-law
of Mr. and Mrs,. Carl Payne
'has received another
promotion, and is now a
Master Sergeant in the
American Marine Corps.

Unpredictable. weather effects flower show
The unpredictable weather this
spring and summer seemed to
take its toll on the Clinton Hor-
ticultural Society's annual flower
show held on Friday, August 26.
This year 28 adult, exhibitors
showed 254 entries compared to
last year's 320 exhibits showed by
29 area gardeners. Twenty junior
green thumbers showed 68 en-
tries this year, while last year 24
junior gardeners showed 102
displays:
Despite the drop in produce'and
gardeners, many prizes were still
awarded to the top gardeners of
the "show. Continuing her winning
streak, Jean McEwan received
the top position of the day. She
won a trophy for obtaining the
highest number of points in the
show, She also won the award in
1976.
Bram Eedenburg received the
Clinton News -Record award for
the second highest count of
points, while Mrs. Marion Powell
won a voucher from Baker's

Farm and Garden Centre for
accumulating the third highest
number of points, tied'with Mrs.
Howard Currie, who took a prize
from Anstett's for the fourth
highest number of points
gathered.
Mrs. Jean Barnett held the best
arrangement in the show and won
the Simpson Sears award for her
imaginative efforts. The Grace
Middteton Memorial award went
to Marion Powell who held the
most points in the arrangement
classes.
Bram Eendenburg's gladiolus
was a prize winner and a cash
award from Bev Wiliiscraftwas
given.. Mr. Eendenburg also took
the best dahlia prize from Evelyn
Olde who gave a cash award.
Mrs. Jean McEwan awarded a
posy bowl to Blossom Garrow for
having the best pansy
arrangement iii the show.
Dorothy Marquis received a cash
award from Ina Durst for her top
table setting arrangement.

Along with the adult gardeners,
the young gardeners also put out
their efforts and imagination in
the show. The Bank of Montreal
gave prizes of $2.50 each to
Robert Snell in the school age
class and Michael Pullen in the
junior gardener class for •ac-
cumulating' the highest q number
of points. Both boys won the same
award last year. Brad James in
the, school age class and.David
Pullen in , the junior , gardeners
held the second highest number'
of points and received a cash
award from Marian . McCann.
Margaret Slpman gave a cash
prize for the third highest to
Elizabeth and Lori Brandon who
tied in -the school .age class and
Todd Baker . in the junior gar-
deners.
Kerrigan Fuels gave cash
prizes to Michael Pullen, David
Pullen, Alex Ivey and Henrietta
Snieder for the' winners in class
