Intermediates instructed On page 7 PAGE 6—CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1977' Colts win ,first round of OBA The Clinton Colts advanced to the next round in the Ontario Baseball Association's playoff action when they put Hanover out in two games straight over the weekend. They will now play the winner of the Tuppervill©- Leamington series 'this weekend. Times and dates have not been set as yet. • In Clinton last Saturday, the Colts pounded out 17 hits en route to a convincing 24-5 win over Hanover in the first game of the OBA playoffs. Cam MacDonald picked up his fifth victory of the season as he pitched the first five innings. Don Bartliff pitched the, last four innings when Cam developed a sore shoulder. The game was actually over after the third inning as the Colts had built up a 14-2 lead after three innings. The Colts scored six runs in the second inning with the big blow in the inning being the . three run 350 -foot homer over the left field fence by Dave Fawcett. After Hanover scored two runs in the top of the third the Colts erupted again, this time for eight runs to take the big lead they never relinquished. The key hit in the lead was an inside the park home -run by Paul Bartliff with two run- ners aboard. It was Bartliff's eighth homer of'the season. The Colts scored three more runs in the sixth on a walk, an error and singles by Fleet and Fawcett. In the seventh, the Colts scored two more on five walks and in the eighth, they added their final four runs. Leading batter for the Colts in this game was Dave Fawcett with a homer and .two singles, Butch .Fleet with two singles, ' Stew Mustard with two .singles, Doc Miller with a double and a single, and one hit each by Don MacDonald, Richard Welsh Dan Colquhoun, Paul Bartliff, Cal Fremlin, Newt Collins, Cam MacDonald and, Greg Butler. Back in Hanover on Sunday afternoon, the Colts defeated Hanover for the second straight day to take the first round of the OBA series. Steve 'Twib' Switzer pitched an excellent game as the Colts won 13-2. Switzer went the distance in scoring his sixth triumph of the season against only one defeat. He struck out six, walked only one, and allowed only ,four base hits. The Colts struck four runs'i in theurth inning to take the lead, 4-0. Mustard opened up the fourth with a walk. After Mustard stole second, Fawcett doubled him home. Fleet then singled Fawcett home. Atfer a wild pitch put Fleet on second, Butler singled him home. Butler later scored in the inning on a two out single by Switzer. The Colts added two more runs in the fifth without the aid of a hit. Hanover scored their first run of f Switzer in the bottom. of the fifth to make the score 6-1. The Colts increased their lead to 9-1 in the seventh on the strength of Paul Bar- tliff's ninth homer of the season. It was an inside of the park home run which rolled some 400 feet down the left field line. Clinton scored another run in the eighth on a walk to Doc Miller and singles by Fremlin and Cam MacDonald. Hanover got that runback in the bottom half of the eighth inning. The Colts consolidated their two game sweep of Hanover with three runs in the ninth. After Butler singled, Paul Bartliff tripled him home and Bartliff was cut down at the plate with a good throw as he attempted to hit his second inside the park home run of the game. Singles by Miller and Fremlin followed by a double by Mustard produced the final tw,o runs of the game. The Colts pounded out 15 hitsin the contest. Paul Bartliff had a homer and a, triple; Butler two singles; Miller, two singles; Fremlin, two singles; and one hit each by Don MacDonald, 'Colquhoun, Mustard, Fawcett, Cam MacDonald, Fleet and Switzer. Final motocross set for Sunday The final event in the Good Time Motocross Series blasts off this Sunday at Hully Gully, near Varna. Individuals and teams have- fought avefought hard throughout the series and with the final battle beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday's thrilling race action will decide the victors and award winners. The team competition will find Sarnia and Burlington driving hard to catch Team London who currently holds a 25 point lead for the Cup. - There were plenty of customers at the baked goods table at the Penny Carnival heldby the Clinton playground youngsters last Thursday. (News -Record photo) SPORTS Ramblingsfrom the races The Medio Elliott Memorial Trot for -a purse of $2,000 will be one of the feature events at 'Clinton Kinsmen Raceway this Sunday, September 4. Medic was formerly the owner of Dapper Dillon, 2:00.2, winner of $102,565 already this year and $139,345 lifetime. The speedy six-year old trotter is now owned by her daughter, Doreen Rowcliffe of Hensall and, her son Barry Elliott of Kit- chener. The Ontario Harness Horsemen's Association four- year-old Pac ig Series will return to Clinton again this week. This race was originally scheduled for Goderich, but ,was awarded to Clinton when the former track did not open. Scarlet Son set a new track record of p, 2:02.3 on July 3 at Clinton when these same horses raced here previously. Qualifying races are held at 12:30 p.m. and post time is 1:30p.m. The two richest races for three -year-olds will be held this month. The Ham- h1etonian, for three-year-old trotters, will be held at Du Quoin, Illinois on Saturday, September 3. The Little Brown Jug, for three-year-old pacers, will be, 'raced at Delaware, 'Ohio on Thursday, September 22. . Derby's Gent, who was a favourite locally when he set track records at nearly every track where he raced, is still going strong for his owners William and James Cadman of Parkhill. The six-year-old gelding by Derby Time - Claybrook Carol was a winner in 1:59 on August 13 at Hazel Park, Michigan for his second -2:00 mile this year. He is currently sporting lifetime earnings of $242,742. He took a record of p, 1:58 at tthe age of four. - At Elmira on Friday night, Bay . B Hayfee, owned ' by Holmesville Valley Par'ms was driven to a second place finish by Verdun Vanstone in a 2:06.3 mile'. Chilly Will was third in the seventh race with his owner Charles Travis of Goderich .up. Chief Noble finished second in a mile which was' timed in 2:08.2, with driver- Bill Rapson for his father Gord.
