Record white .bean crop expected, sales dropping
This year's white bean crop is ex-
pected to be excellent with Ontario
expected to produce in excess of 2
million cwt. -'a record crop.
So far, no weather or disease problems
have been noted but about 10 percent of
the acreage has been reported as
sprayed for white mold. Although 2
million cwt, would be a record crop
closer estimates range between 160,000
acres verstts 155,000 basted on intentions.
• The Michigan crop pptential is ex-
pected Co range between 5.2 ,million cwt.
and 5.7 reillion,cwt. There'have been no
significant .growing problems- there
either but they might occgrif Michigan
does not get the necessary .rain. This
kind. of crdp frtirn Michigan would mean
yields ever 1200 lbs. per acre,, and would
be a one third larger crop than marketed
from 1976. So total North American
1107 supply could approximate an average
.5 million cwt, with total North
American demand of only 1/Z- a million
cwt. in Canada and 3.2. million cwt. in
the U.S. (including seed).
This would mean that Michigan would
have 2 million or more cwt. to sell
overseas in competition with Canada,
Chile, Argentina and Ethiopia. Since
quality navy beans demand in Europe
O and the U.K. only totalled 2.5 to 2.7
million cwt. in 1976 competition is ex -
1
pected to be fierce and will possibly
create lower selling values and larger
carryover.
The only positive demand variables
continue to be buoyant U.K. demand and
the possibility of North America navy
beans supplanting Ethiopia bean sup-
plies due to political and military dif-
ficulties in that country.
Current Michigan„producer prices are
$13.50 per cwt. with selling values at
$16.2 for immediate delivery (August,,;
September) and $16.50 for October,
November delivery. Ontario's price• is
$18 for October shipment export (and $19
domestic', . Sales to date advance 1977
crop total 600,000 cwt. in Michigan most
of which is normal year to year contract
business by large U.S. canners. This
600,000 was sold at close to $21 early in
April, May of 1977. No significant sales
to export customers from Michigan of
advance crop have been made as yet.
Ontario's advance export sales are
122,800 cwt. and domestic sales are
84,700 cwt. giving a 'total of 207,500 cwt.
This represents 10 percent' of the ex-
pected crop. This year's export sales
represents 59 percent of the total sales
, and since the normal sales profile is 80
percent it is obvious the customers are
cautious about buying new crop and
Corn stabilization
plans announced
Declining corn prices have
aiwicreated much interest by
uron County farmers in
corn stabilization, plans, says
Mike Miller, associate ag.
rep. for the county.
For the 1976 crop, the
Federal support price is $2.18
miler bushel. This covers all
corn sold between September
1, 1976 and August 31, 1977. It
does NOT guarantee a
4 $2.18 for his corn, but it is
based on the average price
J for the year (September to
August), which currently is
close to $2.18. To date there is
a possibility of a small
payment - 6-10 cent to 1 cent
per bushel, which would be
available on any sale of corn,
whether sold at $2.30 or $1.80:
The final price and payment
(if any) will be announced in
October and producers would
have to submit sales invoices
along with the application.
Maximum limitations have
not been announced to date.
For the 1977 crop the
Federal plan will again be a 5
year average - this will be
above the $2,18 of the 1976
crop - but how much is not
clear and it will not be an-
nounced until well into 1978: It
could be $2.25 - $2.30 range
and in most other aspects
would function like the. 1976
Support price, with payment
to be made in late fall of 1978.
For 1977 Crop there are
tentative plans for an Ontario
Corn StabiMzation Program.
This program would 1)
Require Enrolment forms;
have a fee of 3-4 cents 'per
bushel (payment of fee
deferred until plan pays out) ;
add approximately 10 - 11
cents per bushel to the 1977
Federal Support Level; have
the same Sept. 1, 1977 to
August 31, 1978 date; Have a
maximum payment of 30,000
bushels per man.
Producers are urged to
watch for two further an-
nouncements in September
and October.
The first - enrolment forms
and deadline for the Ontario
Corn Stabilization Program
for their 1977 Corn Crop.
The second - the possibility
of application forms for '1976
Federal Corn Support Price .if
a payment is to be made.
'New crop monitor
saves stored grain
Farmers in Ontario will no
longer have to operate their
'Train storage programs
"blind" says a Goderich man,
Don Stewart. A new solid
state, battery operated Crop
Store Monitor is available to
check in -bin temperature at
up to eight locations.
Lost cash income from
lower grain grades, or
spoilage can now be greatly
reduced with the aid of a
torage• temperature
onitoring system that can
e geared to the management'
program for drying and
storing the crop.
The Crop Store Monitor
uses eight separate ther-
mometer sensors which are
normally attached to cables
in a storage bin prior to filling
the bin with grains or
oilseeds. Each, location of the
sensor is connected to the
• control monitor box where a
dial reads off the in -bin
temperature from a range of -
20 degrees C to + 40 degrees
C. A ninth sensor measures
outside air temperature.
The new Crop Store
Monitor has been introduced
to Ontario this year by RDS
-.- 'Agrican Limited who are
4 ocated at Goderich in the
eart of the corn and bean
growing area.
When measuring the
temperature at any one
sensor point, the dial on the
monitor will still be pointing
to the previous setting so the
extent and direction of the
change can be noted. The
individual sensors in a bin are
all connected to a central
monitor which is located at
. either the outside of the bin,
!-r any distance from, it.
The most popular size
storage bin for application of
monitoring systems is in the
25,000 bu storage range. In
.most set-ups there are four
sensors located down the
centre bf the bin in the grain
mass, and four others are
located in the top four feet Of
W the grain, spread equi-dstant
around the' top, four feet in
from the bin side walls.
Systems for other more
simple or more complex farm
storage programs are
available, from simple ha'hd
held probe temp -testing units,
to multiple crop -store
monitor set-ups.
Don Stewart, President of
RDS Agrican Limited said
that the price range is from
under $100 to $800 and is
based, on the size and com-
plexity of the installation.
Farmers in Ontario in-
terested in learning more
about this program to help
improve storage, aeration,
drying and monitoring
techniques should contact:

when Michigan producer prices moved
from $15 per cwt. in mid July to $13.50, it
created more buyer apprehension.
Statistics on production volumes on
the Neilsen shelf movement show an
increasing drop in the demand for baked
beans with pork. In 1974, 129,550,571 lbs.
were sold. In 1975, 118,747,912 pounds
were sold which meant sales were down
8.3 percent from the previous year. 41
1975, 101,989,289. pounds were seld so the
sale,s,were down 14 percent.
. Statistics Show that beans move well
when they have featured prices but with
a falling total retail market canner
profit margins are adversely affected by
continued 'features unless gains in
market share from such features are
permanent.
A national food survey of Britain in the
Economist on July 2 reported that the
real value of food purchased in Britain
(dollar volume adjusted for inflation)
fell 1.9 percen in the last quarter of 1977
as versus the last quarter of 1976.
Shoppers cut back on convenience foods
except frozen (because fresh vegetable
prices were high in midwinter). But
baked beans are moving well and in
many British chain stores they are used
as loss leaders.
