Ratepayers urge council to
go slow at annual meeting
The Bayfield Ratepayers
Annual meeting was
preceded last , Saturday
morning, August 2Q with a
presentation by OPP Con-
stable R. W. Wilson, Com-
munity Services Officer for
Huron County who showed a
film on the apprehension of
criminals who were stealing
from cottages and dwellings,
and he also outlined the
cottage security program. A
"Brinks Security Marker"
pen is available' to mark
personal property, for iden-
tification and these can be
purchased through members
of the Bayfield Lions Club.
Reeve Ed Oddleifson gave
his annual report to the
meeting and mentioned the
four subdivisions, namely',
Ducharme, Fair Acres,
Woods and Eugene St. He also
mentioned the equalized
assessment being prepared
by the Province and was
uncertain as to whether it
would be implemented in 1978
as previously planned.
In his opening remarks,
President of the Bayfield
Ratepayers Association, Joe
Laudenback remarked that
Bayfield has boomed second
to none and urged the council
to go slow, be careful and be
wise in their jdd ements and
to make sure that the building
tbylaws are adhered to.
He pleaded for a "slow
down" in building so as to
prevent the need for such
services as sewage and water
as the ,mill rate would soar
and the costs of such a
program astronomical.
A great deal of discussion
ensued on'4the genuine con-
cern for the heritage of Main
St. and elsewhere in the
village and the following
petition is being circulated to
present to the village council.
The petition reads: "In
view of its unique character,
it is imperative that certain
actions be undertaken to
maintain the village of
Bayfield as the type of
community we have all
enjoyed through the years. It
is apparent that many
changes , have already taken
,;,place and more are con-
templated. In view of the
foregoing, the undersigned
recommend the following be
undertaken:
1) The Local Architectural
Conservanc,y Advisory
Committee (LACAC) which
was appointed approximately
September 1976, and has
never met, be put into im-
mediate operation before any
further changes be made on
Main Street or elsewhere.
2) The zoning bylaws tf the
village be looked into and
updated if necessary.
3) Members be added to the
LACAC representing the
Ratepayer's Association.
Anyone who desires to sign
the •above petition should
