The Huron F of A also believes that increases in hydro production will en- courage more manufacturing industries, and further burden the economic . position of the farmer. "We are trying to point out that the economy of our country cannot, afford to operate any more unprofitable in- dustry," says Huron F of A President Alan Walper. Walper feels ' industry should "try to become more competitive with the world market". The seven -page brief points out that over the past 20 years, the price of energy has declined in comparison to the prices of labor or borrowing money. It further reasons that for this reason, it was more profitable for business and manufacturing to use more energy than to employ more, workers or buy energy- efficient machinery. However as the energy prices in- crease, the brief states, the cost of energy begins to overtake wage in- creases and the increase in capital prices. It also becomes more profitable to substitute workers or machinery for expensive energy. According- to the brief, it has been concluded that the United States could have zero energy growth through to the year 2,000 and at the same time increase employment between 1.5 per cent and ,three percent. "There would be no decline production of goods and services or overall U. S. economic growth," says the brief. An interesting comparison, chart in the reonrt (shows that the Gross National Product per capita in Canada is $5,372. Energy consumption per capita is equivalent to 8.5 tons of oil. Unem- ployment stands at 5.4 per cent in this in country. In Sweden on the other hand, the Gross National Product per capita is $6,975; oil consumption per capita is equivalent to 5.5 tons; and unem- ployment is reported at two per cent. There's a similar situation in Germany where the Gross National Product Da. capita is $5,618; oil consumption per On page 9 J ALL PRICES SHOWN IN THIS AD GUARANTEED EFFECTIVE THROUGH SATURDAY, AUGUST 27TH, 1977.
