There will be no Inter-
mediate "C" hockey played
in Clinton this winter, as the
Clinton Colts hockey club has
folded.
Management made the
decision after wrestling with
a poor financial balance sheet
for the last several years and
poor fan support.
"Lack of finances is the
number. one" reason we've MiflOr' ho,ckey.coache,s.
folded," said Robert "Doc"
Miller, who has managed the
team for the last six'years: '
' The club, which was started
in the '1920's, has gone under
several times in the past,the
latest being 1970.
1Viiller-also blamed the lack
of players for this': year's
rooster as another reason for
throwing in the towel.
"With Goderich getting
back in (Intermediate "C")
this year we would be losing
several players, and by the
end of the season last year,
many other players had lost
.interest," Miller said.
The Mitchell Red Devils
are also going under this
season.
Along with the' returning
Goderich Sailors, Group 4 Qf
the ,Ontario Hockey
Association Intermediate
"C" league will feature the
Port Elgin Sunocos, the
defending champions, the
Lucknow Bulldogs, and a new
entry fqrm Howick that,uspd
to play in the WOAA.
Fergus, Milverton and
Harri'ston will return to
Group 5 and will be joined by
St. Clements from the WOAA
and Bradford Packers who
played Petrolia Squires in the
OHA "C" final last year and
lost. The Packers played in a
now defunct
OHA grouping.
Schedule for the 10 mem-
bers will he drawn up at a
meeting Aug. 30 at the
Howick community centre.

On Sunday August 14, the
Thorndale Angels edged out
the Clinton Colts at Thorndale
by a score of 7-6 to even up
their best of three semi-final
series in Huron Perth play at
one game each; Thorndale
catcher George Taylor hit
reliever Don Bartliffs first
pitch leading off the ninth
inning to give the Angels the
victory.
The Colts took.a 2-0 lead in
the second inning on two
walks, an error, and a single
by Richard Welsh. Thorndale
narrowed the count to 2-1 with
a run in the bottom half of the
second inning on a Colt error
and three consecutive singles
off Colt starter Steve Surtzer.
The Angles took the lead 3-2 in
the fourth on a double by John
Atkin and three singles by
Don Martin, John Elliott and
Dave MacDonald.
Clinton regained a 4-3 lead
in the fifth as they scored two
runs on doubles, by, Cal
Fremlin and Dave Fawcett
sandwiched around a ' single
by Stew Mustard. But the
Angels wasted little time as
they came roaring back in the
' bottom of the fifth to go ahead
6-4.
Richard Welsh singled to,
open up the Colt eighth inning
and before it was over Stew
Mustard had doubled him
home to make the score. 6-5.
The Colts tied the game 6-6 in
the top of the ninth but
George Taylor put the game
away for the Angels with his
second homer of the season..
Don Bartliff in relief of
starter Steve Surtzer suffered
his first 'loss of the season.
Don' has won two games this
year. He has been used
mostly as a spot starter, as,
Mustangs
well as being an outfielder.
Stew Mustard and Richard
Welsh were the hitting stars
for the Colts in a losing cause.
Mustard went four for five at
the plate,' while Welsh went
three for four. Dave Fawcett
picked up two hits while Cal
Fremlin gathered the only
other Colt hit'.
Nicholson pitches one hitter
Last Friday evening back
in Clinton in the third and
deciding game,the Colts
showed why t,iey were
number one in the' standings
atop the Huron -Perth League
this season as they put on an
awesome display of hitting by
litterly clobbering the Angels
by a score' of 31; to 1. Clinton
had 27 hits to Thorndale's 2,
After Thornda•le scored an
unearned' run off Mark
Nicholson in the first inning it
was all Clinton from there on
in as they scored'at will.
In pitching only seven
innings and allowing only one
safety,, Nicholson gained his
eighth victory of the season.
He has suffered only one
defeat. He struck out 16
batters in seven innings. He is
well over the hundred mark
this season in that depart-
ment.
Following is the number of
runs the Colts scored in each
inning. Three in the first, four
in the second, six in the thira,
three in the fifth, seven in the
sixth, one in the seventh and
seven more runs in the eighth
inning.
The Bartliff brothers, Don
and Paul led the 27 hit
barrage with four hits each in
going four for, five at the
plate.
Junior "C" winner
Paul had a homer and three
doubles. The homer was
Paul's sixth of the season. He
leads all Colt hitters in that
department. Don had a
double and three singles.
Right behind the Bartliffs
were Butch Fleet, Stew
Mustard and Dave Fawcett
with three hits apiece. Cal
Fremlin, Steve Switzer and
Dan Colquhoun each
collected two hits while Don
Miller, Mark Nicholson and
Newt Collins rounded out the
hit parade with one safety
each.
Theowin enabled the Colts to
advance to the Huron -Perth
championship against the
Dashwood Tigers who
eliminated Crediton in the
other ,gemi-final match -up.
This should be a good series
as the Colts held a four game
to two 'edge in the schedule
between the two clubs. This
series will be a best of five
and it started last night
(Wed.) Score was
unavailable at press time.
This coming weekend will
also see the Colts open up
their O.B.A. quarter -final
series against either Hqnover
or Tillsonburg. The O.B.A.
chairman has indicated that'
two games must be played
this weekend.
Check for posters around °
town, but its most likely the
Colts will play Saturday
afternoon due to the races on
Sunday. So get out and
support the Colts. They need
your moral support.
