Mrs. Wm. Logie, sr., one of Huron's
early pioneers passed away on Tuesday
last at the ripe age of 90 years. Since
the death of her aged partner who died
a few years ago, `she lived with her son,
Rev. John Logie, East Tilbury. Her re-
mains were brought to her grand -daugh-
ter's, Mrs. Wm. Elder, Hensali, on Wed-
nesday, and buried on Thursday morning
in the Rodgert'ille burial ground.
Ailsa, Craig.
Mr. A. Thompson, of Exeter, was
severely kicked by his horse last Satur-
day. It appears he was about to start
for Home when he found that the animal
was ill. He called Dr. Maearthur, who
administered a dose of medicine and left
another to be given in an hour, which
1 Mr. Thompson attempted to administer,
1 290 when the struggling
•.. oo a beast kicked'him in
1 the face, inflicting, a fearful gash, which,
bled profusely. . From the fact that he
1 • 508... was so far from the animal as to escape
i' the full force of the blow he owes his life.
1 He was able to start for home the follow -

Last Monday eveninc about 8 o'clock,

Literary Society is Willert's hall, Friday

and were highly delighted with the ofiz-
eient reading of the programme, which was
placed in the hands of Mr. Jos. Snell, prin-
cipal of our public school, who acted' in the
capacity of chairman. Parties from Exeter,
Zurich, Kirkton, Blake, Sarepta, Khiva
and other places, contributed to the pleas-
ures of the evening. The programme, con-
sisting of dialogues, recitations, readings,
stump speeches, comic songs, instrum8ntal
selections by Misses H. Fried,' E. Pried,
Miss Bastard and others, also by the Italian
and mouth -organ bands. . We are not pre-
pared to give a detailed account of the pro-
ceedings of the evening, but would say that
credit is due the committee for their
untiring efforts to make the entertainment
a success, which they fully accomplished.
The proceeds go towards keeping up the
society.
Kirkton,
Kirkton, though but a small place is
just beeoming notorious for its big blazes.
On New Year's night, 1885, Sparling's
grist mill was destroyed by fire ; on a
beautifil night last summer, Campbell's
cheese factory met a similar fate, and on
Thursday night last, the aplended mill
erected on the site of the former one, was
totally destroyed by fire together with its
contents. The fire originated in percise-
ly the same place as before and was first
noticed by Mr. W. Leigh, who forthwith
raised the alarm. All efforts to ex-
tinguish the flames were of no avail and
at 12:30 a. in. -about two hours from the
time the fire was discovered -the build-
ing fell. Fortunately for the rest of the
village the wind was blowing in a wester-
ly direction which for a time enda agered
the buildings of Mr. John Hazlewood
some thirty rods distant. A large quan-
tity of wood was in the yard at the time,
About thirty cords of which was burnt.
The common belief is that the building
was fired by some malicious devil, and
public indignation rules high. ..One of the
ground windows at the rear of the
building near where the fire started, was
found by those who arrived first on the
scene, to have been burst in. Mr. Spar -
ling, as was his custom, before retiring
for the night, visited the null with one of
his employees and found everything ap-
parently all right, The loss to the own-
er, as well as to the village and country
round, is very great, as the still was do-
ing a Iarge business and giving splendid
satisfaction. It was valued at $8,000
and insured for $5,000. Much sympathy
is felt for Mr. Sperling for the loss he has
sustained.
