"Babes inArms" held over
"Babes in Arms" goes into
its second week at the
Playhouse. Three near
capacity crowds greeted the
opening performances of the
nostalgic 1937 musical,and
offered it standing Qvatios.
However, the show, which
had heavy advance booking,
suffered a severe economic.
slump. when Doug . Bale's
negative reaction appeared in
the Thursday . edition of The
London Free Prre'ss. Out by
week's znd enthusiastic
audiences helped' to turn the
tide again to establish the hit
which Playhouse Manager,
James Murphy, had hoped
for. Like all musicals,, the
production of "Babes • in
Arms" represented a huge
financial investment.
It was the first time the
Playhouse had announced in
advance a two week run. In
past years, "Hello Dolly" and
"Barefoot in the Park" en-
joyed two week runs but these
were holdovers. Last season's
"Anne of Green Gables"
played, two holdover weeks
for a total of 18 performances
to near capacity or sold out
houses.
Audience surveys indicate
a preference for musicals,
Mr. Murphy stated.

The little guys fight back
in latest Blyth production.
It isn't only big city con-
sumer advocates and
citizens' groups that can fight
city hall. Small town people
can have their say too, and
the Blyth Summer Festival
shows them how in their
latest play, "The Shortest
Distance Between Two
Points" opening on Tuesday,,
August 9th at 8:30 p.m..The
play is the story of a small
village that finds , itself
threatened by the provincial
government's plans to build.a
highway directly through
their town. The villagers find
a novel solution to their
problem, but not before a
little havoc and a lot of laughs
emerge from the situation.
