Lake water levels continue to drop
Great Lakes water levels
continued to fall last month
with at least one of the lakes,
Huron, expected to drop
below its long-term average
_ level during ,the next six
months.
At the end of June, Lake
Huron was about 25 inches (63
centimetres) below what it
was a year ago.
The restilt, for cottage
owners and marina operators
has been the return of wider
beaches and shallower water
channels. In some cases,
shorelines have been
drastically re -altered by what
appears to be the emergence
of a low water cycle on` -the
lakes.
'.The U.S. Army COrps of
Engineers in. Detroit says
,41)that by the end of July Lake
Huron will drop another inch,
continuing its seasonal
decline into December.
By the end of the year, Lake
Huron is expected to be 12
inches (25 centimetres) below
its December, 1976 level,
putting the lake below its
long-term average for 4hat

month, or about 32 inches
below the all-time December
high set in 197J at the height
of high water levels.
The level of Lake St. Clair

centimetres) below what it
was a year ago, 'or about two
inches (five centimetres)
below its level at the end of
May,
Lake Erie's water level at
the end of June was about 14
inches (about 36 centimetres).
below that of a year ago and
about two inches below what
it was at the end of May'.
According to officials at the
Canada Centre for Inland
Waters at . Burlington, ex.:
tremely dry weather this
summell' and fall Would
produce below-norm'al watet
levels,on all the Great Lakes.
"With the possible . ex-
ception of Lake superior even
extremely Wet weather over
the next six months 'would not
raise any of the Great -Lakes
above last Decembers
eldvations," an Environment
Canada spokesman said.
Lake Ontario already has
fallen below its long-term
.444•
average level for this time of
year, down about nine inches
(22 centimetres) from its
•
long-term average, or about
-'g inches (71 centimetres)
below that of a year ago.
ensall arena fund up- ped
The fund raising objectives
for HenSall afena will be
pushed higher despite a
council resolution to accept
the lowest bondable tender,
according to fund chairman
• Eric Luther.
Council accepted a tender
from Logan Construction,
Stratford, during the regular
meeting last week.
The tender sets total arena
costs at $700,950, but
engineers are negotiating
with .the contractor 'to lower
the, costs. The 'curreolt
$150,0110 fund raising ob-
jective is based on a total
estiznated cost of $600,000.
Mr. Luther said the fund
objecti,ye would have to be
raised "When the thing gets
squared away and We get a.
firm decision."
"When we hav,e been ap-
proached by council and the
parks board, then the (fund)
committee is going to have to
make '`ga decision." "We're
going to have, to, face the
situation", said Mr. Luther,
The Logan tender was the
lowest acceptable to council
because a tender for $687,850
from Robinson Construction
could- not be bonded, said
Reeve Harold'Knight.
"We're looking at ways of
saving some money but
up to the building committee
to decicle what will be,cut and
how much", said engineer
Addie Blankestign of C.C.
Park-er and Associates;
consultants for the arena.
Mr. Blarikestign hoped
contract would be signed with
Logan Construction by July
31 but the proposal tenders
are valid untli August 7, 60
days after the tenders
opening.
The Logan* tender sets the
arena completion date at 28
weeks folloWing the begin-
ning of construction.

It's a little unnerving to" discover a'10 -foot hole in your
front yard, right under the sidewalk and realize you've
been.walking over it for years, as Shirley Kay found last
Tuesday morning. Workmen froin Thernen's Nursery
were tearing up the old sidewalk when one, Gary
Gregory nearly fell down the seven -foot wide bricked
well that had eight feet of water in it. Young Scott Ka
looks down the whole before workmen filled it in. (News -
