Festival to offer films, art
There is more than theatre
at the Blyth Summer Festival
this summer, although there
is plenty of that. In addition to
its seven , week season of
plays, the Festival isoffering
film buffs a Sunday evening
film series and art -lovers a
summer -long art exhibition.
Sunday, July 10 marks the
inauguration of the Festival's
first film series. "Birth of a

D.W.. Griffith, will ,open -the

Baker and his wife, Claire
Crawford along with the
powerless voice of .the maid,
Barbara Saxbet'g Land.
However, to make up
tor
these weaknesses there are
three characters who put on
the best performances to hold
the play together. •
It's hard to determine the
star of the play between
nobleman John Rutter and
manservant Stan Kane; Each
portray their characters with
quality, especially Rutter
who showsall the style,
craftiness and Coyness of a
young nobleman. He stays
with his character throughout
the ,play and even his ex-
pressions, his moves and
poses show the "quality" of
his class.
Not until well into the first
act are ithe potentials ofd the
quiet -and" steadfast man,
servant, Kane found.
His character is allowed to
develop as the play continues
and he is easily seen as much
more of a charming gen-
tleman than the dandy
nobleman, and a lover that
not even the most -cynical
-lady cannot fall for.
However, the audience
definitely falls for him when
he sells th.at play with his
rich baritone voice. While the
audience hard to strain their
ears to hear some of the cast
sing, Kane easily filled the
entire hall with his spine -
New director at playhouse
James Murphy announced
recently that Ron Hartmann
is taking over directorial
duties . for Any Wednesday.
Francis Hyland who was
scheduled 'to do the play, was
released from her Playhouse
contract ,in order to accept a
major film assignment.
Mr. Hartmann is a well
seasoned actor and' director
and has performed 'over 100
majors' roles across Canada.
He' was for three seasons,
resident 'director for the
Straw Hat Players in ,Port
Carling guiding such talents
as Gordon Pinsent and Jackie
Burroughs. Recently he
appeared with Francis
Hyland in Artichoke at the
Press Theatre in ' St.
Catharines.
The next Playhouse
production Any Wednesday
enjoyed a long run on -
Broadway with Sandy
Duncan. It later became a
film starring Jane Fonda.
Judith Dagley, bright young
actress who received critical
praise in the. Playhouse.
production of Plaza Suite,
plays the leading role; Just
prior to her engagement at
the Playhouse, Miss Dagley
was featured on the King of
Kensington series.
The play, a sophisticated
adult comedy, plays Tuesday
through Saturday evening's at
8:30 p.m. and Wednesday and

Judith Lehane as the pr•otrd

decided to change her Ways,
also gives a convincing
performance. She has a good
voice and duets between her
and Kane or Rutter is one of
the finer performances in the
play.
The characters and plot are
accentuated by, the fine
costuming of Michael Harris.
His outfitting is colorful and
expresses the social distin-
ctionsrbetween the classes of
the 1800's. .
'For ' 'ome added en-
tertainment in the play.
Forbes John •
choreographs a 'number of
minuet styled dances. While,
these too give an added
feeling to the mood and
setting of the play, the stage
•
is somewhat cramped for the
dance scene,
Another interesting prop
for the play- is the setting
itself: The° unique—setting is'
made up -of three scenes
which are rotated manually,,
The Tudor exterior of the inn,
an upstairs be.dr•oom, and a
main, room make up the back-
drop.
Although the play has a few
flab's and weak moments it is
still a fine performance for
the theatre which is in its first
year of independent
production.
The potential for a fine play
is -there and wit h some more
