From up here
By Shelley McPhee
Last night I played tennis, the night before that I went
to a play and Monday evening I went to the movies in
Goderich. I •spent all day Sunday at the beach and.
Saturday evening I visited with•friends.
Somehow I never run out of.things to do or placds to go
despite the -fact -that I live in the so-called socially boring
community -of Clinton and Goderich.
For years, the young people of this area have been
complaining that there'snothing to do, that Life is a drag,
that -this area is the pits. Yet they do nothing to rectify;
what I consider to be an imaginary prob em.' '
Granted things are a little quieter.i•wthelwinter months
but in actuality, oryat least I think, there are many things
to do. Unfortunately many young people have lived under,_
the illusion! -that things -are so dry here that now their
vegetated minds cannot be put to active use, ' "
At the Park Theatre the other night the place .was
almost empty, despite the.faqt that onepf the best movies.
of the season, "Network" was playing, Not many
teenagers were at the 'playhouse and the beach wasn't
overflowing with.young.sun worshippers or water babies.
Meanwhile, 'light after night the usual group of zom-
bies -sit in the park on the square and a smiliar group held
their post in front, f,the former Priceg'ard Store in
Clinton.
The dreams and fantasies of the young seem to•be get
out of this area, to go to the city wheretheir•lives would
,be exciting.
Mind you, it's a nice change to get away for a weekend
but one can hardly evaluate life in the city from such a
short social visit. I lived' in Toronto for three years and
although life wasn't' dismal, it wasn't always a, lively
social affair. In'fact, I think that I go out more here, see a
greater variety of events and have an equally enjoyable
life in this small community as I did in the cosmopolitan
city of Toronto.
Perhaps my tastes are different than many of my
peers in this area, but there's nothing that I enjoy more
than having a few drinks with friends, spending an
evening at the local theatres, going to the Huron County
Museum for an, afternoon or just lazing on the beach.
Maybe I'm showing my old age and don't really lead
the wildly exciting life of an international playgirl, but I
have a healthy linagination which keeps my head above
the localboredom syndrome that afflicts many of the
young people.

I've been temporarily laid
off from my job as a driver.,
and I was wondering how, 1
might go about getting' a
license to teach people to drive
a car. Can you tela me please,
what all is involved.
This is quite a tall order as
there is quite a bit involved,
however the following should
give you some idea of how to
go about it:
1) Apply to Ministry of
Transport and enclose $25.
2) You'll receive application
and medical forms plus a
drivers handbook, and details
on exam requirements.
3) Take medical from your
own doctor, then report to the
Ministry of Transport office
with your completed forms
and 4 passport photos and $10.
4} You'll get a written test of
50 questioris and a vision test,
and if you pass them you'll be
issued a 30 day temporary
instructors permit., (Valid for
teaching, provided there's a
qualified instructor in the
car.) -
5) During this 30 day period
you•must take another written
test plus a very..thorough road
test, and finally, you will 'be
tested on your ability to in-
struct.
6) To be issued, an Ontario
driving instructors license you
MUST PASS ALL of the tests.
The cost of the license is $15
and is renewable each year on
March 31st:
