Diversity
in Home
Furnishings
The multi -dimensional Canadian
home is unique in its variety. Since
the earliest settlers set up
housekeeping in their new land, the
Canadian home has been a
conglomerate of ideas, some native,
but many imported.
Now, as then, the Canadian home
must serve many purposes. We
devclop ou r hones a round ou r varied
lifestyles. We live in apartments,
'single• family homes, mobile homes,
duplexes, flats and townhouses. All
these dwellings are as individual as
the people who live in them and large
or small they reflect their -
inhabitants' lifestyles.
Dependence on imported goods and
ideas has continued to this day.
But it appears more and more that
we are granting credence to our own
lifestyles, which differ markedly
from those in Europe the place from
which we have traditionally borrowed
so many ideas for our homes.
Diversity is the name of the game.
It is overwhelming to see the
choices one has in home furnishings.
Like sh many years ago, the in-
fluences on our homestyles are en-
dless, he they ethnic or practical.
Besides the cool contemporary
styles, we have all the traditions of
centuries past from which to choose.
Our forefi thers brought _their Walsh
pewter dresser's with them when they
came over on whatever boat, but
today, the duplicator's art is so
skillfull, that all we have to do is rushy
down to the nearest furniture em-
porium and pick'out such an item in a
minute.
"Then there are ornate French and
•Spanish styles and the classical
English looks which are so strongly a
part of our furnishings heritage.
Relatively speaking very little fur-
niture designed° isn't rein-
terpretations of older styles. A great
deal of the contemporary furnishings]
are designed elsewhere.
Even so, after we get all these
designs together, we make the hest
and most furniture in the world.
Fortunately, we are becoming less
self-conscious about interpreting our
own lifestyles, too, so we are using
more diversity in our home decors.
This is a healthy sign as we move
into a period where our homes will
continue to he increasingly important
to maintaining individuality. The auto
industry may be forced to get hack to
Henry Ford's original car color -
scheme, `Available in any color, as
long as .it's black,' hut the home
furnishings industry appears to he in
fabulous shape as far as variety is
concerned.
