HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News-Record, 1977-06-16, Page 19Heather Gardens,
afamily affair
"Its a family affair", is the
appropriate phrase to
describe Heather Gardens.
The home for the mentally
and physically handicapped
in Vanastra is run by Mrs.
Blair Haskett and her two
daughters-in-law, Lark and
Pk Shirley Haskett along with a
staff of fifteen. An additional
39 residents work under
-special permits for the
handicapped from Man-
power.
The private guest home
which opened in December
1975 is contained in three
buildings which were for-
mally the officers mess at the
old Clinton Air Force base.
The buildings have been
divided to suit the individual
needs of the home. A main
building houses the cooking
and eating quarters, offices,
activity and sitting rooms for
the residents. Another
building has been designated
for the use of the ladies and a
third building is used by the
▪ men.
Presently some 70 people
come to Heather Gardens
each day. For the daily rate
of $6.50 the people are sent by
a social worker or
psychiatrist and are given the
chance to prepare themselves
for society.
Approximately 190 people
have gone through Heather
Gardens. This private guest
home offers workshops,
bowling lanes, bingos,
dances, sing -songs, swim-
ming at the Vanastra Com-
munity Centre and various
volunteer help from Church
groups.
For Clair Haskett this type
of work is nothing new. She
received her twining in
Glasgow, Scotland as a
registered psychiatric nurse.
She nursed for eight years
and then raised her family,.
Until the administration or*
Heather Gardens Mrs.
Haskett had been involved in
volunteer work.
Like Heather Gardens,
Mrs. Haskett ran a similar
self supporting home in St.
Thomas. However the
locality and space df the
buildings in Vanastra
prompted her to buy them
and set up a bigger in-
stitution.
Re -decorating and im-
provements helped make the
buildings into a private home.
In the future Heather Gar-
dens are hopefully going to
receive a licence from the
Provincial Government to
become an institutional
home. For this Heather
Gardens will need to meet the
standards of nursing homes
and hospitals and further
improvements are being
made to , meet these
requirements.

derson.
The weather was perfect on
Monday evening for the
annual Spring drive, spon-
soredr by the Exeter United
Church. The cars arrived at
the Home at six -thirty and all
• of the residents who were
able, had a lovely two hour
drive to several areas in the
county. This event is one of,
the highlights of the year at
the Home and many thanks to
those who provided .cars and
arranged the drive.
The Central Huron
Secondary School Band
played for a concert on the
• front lawn on Family Night.
Miss Story is director of the
thirty -piece band and
although the evening was
cool, a great many of the
residents were able to enjoy
the concert from the rooms on
the west side of the building
and the front entrance.
Three new members were
welcomed to the over 90 Club
at the June meeting. They
are, ' Mrs. Grasby, Mrs.
Fremlirl, and Mrs. Foran.
Twenty-six members at-
tended the meeting, were
entertained with music by the
Huronview Orchestra, and
sing -a -long led by Nelson
Lear and Betty Rogers. The
Walkerburn Club volunteers
assisted with the activities.
