ELECTION ECHOES
McKINLEY SOLIDLY BEHIND
RETAINING CLINTON HOSPITA
•
(sy DICK ATKEY)
Anson McKinley, Progressive Conservative candidate
for Huron -Middlesex in the June 9 election, left no doubt
regarding his stand on retaining Clinton Public Hospital
at a "Meet -Your -Candidate" rally in the Council
Chamber, Clinton Town Hall, Tuesday evening, May 24.
.In regard to a query, he said, from a prepared
Statement:
"I have been informed in writing from the Minister of
Health, Dennis Timbrell, that the future of the Clinton
Hospital no longer rests with the outcome of the
Province's appeal procedure.
"If the Government made any effort to close the
Clinton Hospital while 1 was the elected representative of
this riding, I would be willing to vote against the
Government to make my views known, something our
Liberal MPP was not willing to do.
"In fact, the Liberal Party supported the closure policy
because they felt it politically expedient to de so at the
time."
Mr. McKinley also stated that he was strongly opposed
to the erection of a Hydro Electric nuclear power plant in
Huron County because, as he said, "it would decimate
our agricultural economy by taking out of production
some of the finest agricultural land in Canada."
Dr. Ken Wood capably chaired the meeting which was
arranged by Clinton Progressive Conservative
Association. Ninety-four persons, of all ages, turned out
on an extremely warm evening to hear the candidate's
firm stand on the hospital, the power project, and other
issues. Plenty of opportunity was provided for
questioning Mr. McKinley who pleased his audience with
his forthright answers based on a wide knowledge of
fifteen years in municipal politics.
In introducing Mr. McKinley, Dr. Wood said he was a
fine Canadian citizen, a family man, a successful farmer
and business man, with fifteen years experience in
municipal government culminating in the Wardenship of
Huron County in 1975. He was a dedicated man,
responsible to his obligations.
"Hurort4Iiddlesex really does need a Government
member, not a representative of a minority third party,"
Dr. Wood declared.
Mr. McKinley reported that he had been campaigning
vigorously and that he had had a good reception
wherever he had gone. He declared that the Liberal
candidate's talk about regional government in this area
was nothing but "a white elephant", "a red herring",
and "blatant nonsense". From his experience in
municipal politics, he would state that "our municipal
people have more say with the Government regarding
these matters than all the Liberal members at Queen's
Park combined." The emphasis on such matters should
be at the municipal level, he felt.
Mr. McKinley said he believed the Socialist threat
from the NDP should be seriously considered as
something that would undermine our institutions.
"I am a firm believer in the free enterprise system
which needs to be guarded jealously. Freedom of choice
involves a corresponding responsibility," the P -C can-
didate declared.
Mr. McKinley said the Opposition parties called the
election by "ganging up" on the Government.
Dr. Fred Thompson, Clinton's oldest physician,
praised the ,work done by Clinton Hospital over the years
and emphasized its importance to the community. "I
don't think this gervernment has any notion of closing
hospitalsr that are so. much a part of community life," he
declared.
Owen Delve, chairman of Personnel Committee,
referred to a letter from Ontario Hospital Association
stating that "Durham, Clinton and Chesley hospitals are
no longer under -any threat of closure".
Gerry Ginn, vice-president, Huron -Middlesex. P -C
Association (Provincial)? brought greetings and lauded
Anson McKinley's tremendous command of municipal
problems and their answers during their association in
Huron County Council and also his other good qualities.
He pointed out that a turnover of two votes per poll in the
riding would elect Anson on June 9.
Others who spoke briefly at the request of the chair-
man included Gerry Holmes, finance; Owen Delve,
Personnel; Dick Atkey, Publicity and Advertising; Mrs.
4'rlelen Bartliff, Communications; Mrs. Donna Wood,
Canvassing; Mrs. Kay Bartliff, Committee Room (which
is open daily next Town Hall); and Elmer Hayter, past
president, riding association.
George Lavis delivered a strong speech in support of
Anson McKinley. "Jack Riddell is a nice guy, but where
was he when the vote was taken in the Legislature — out
behind the barn? We must have a member of the
Government to get anything done," he declared. 'we've
got to pull hard behind Anson and support his strong
stand behind our hospital."
The chairman praised the work of Joe Murphy over the
years. The meeting adjourned at 10:35 p.m.
paid by the Huron -Middlesex
Progressive Conservative Party
