Clinton News-Record, 1977-05-05, Page 13• Through the other weeklies Gorrie residents want to see their 120 -year-old mill preserved, and according to the Wingham Advance -Times of last week, they're taking steps to do so. The residents delivered their message to the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority, owners of the building and park, at a public • meeting in the Howick Community Centre on April 21, which saw nearly 50 per cent of the people attending in favour of preserving the mill. Fifteen members of the community volunteered to form a historical committee to spearhead the project, N;o one opposed the $150,000 project and plans are being made to apply for grants to • help finance the restoration. Historically minded residents in Blyth are also preparing plans for their centennial celebrations. The Blyth Standard reported that invitations have been sent out, souvenirs have been ordered, and special events including a dance and circus have been planned. The celebrations which will take place over the summer will also see a steam ►,,comotive and train travelling through the village with visitors firom Toronto. This will be in conjunction with the jubilee year in Goderich. The . Lucknow United Church was rocking on April 22 and 23 as 24 CGIT girls' • participated in a weekend rockathon. The girls rocked in their chairs up to 18 hours and raised $1,000 to be used for their foster child in Peru. According to the Lucknow Sentinel the girls watched television, 'listened to i records, read, sang and knit or crocheted lap covers for the residents at Pinecrest • Nursing Horne, during their sitting. The Exeter -Times Advocate reports that there won't be any comfortable nights spent in the Exeter Police office. In accordance with new provincial regulations, the • beds in cells will be of metal construction and there will be no mattress or any blankets. The cells are apt to be cold and damp since the floors will be concrete. The regulations have been prompted by the fatal fire at the Stratford jail. night, South Huron Hospital may be a better choice. According to the Times - Advocate, the hospital has been granted Accredited 40 0 Status by the . Canadian Council on Hospital Accreditation. The council establishes standards for hospital operations and sees that these are being met. The assessment by the council includes ad- ministration, medical staff, nursing service, dietary, `-emergency, housekeeping, maintenance, laboratory_ and X-ray facilities, medical and clinical records, pharmacy and governing body. Exeter is proud to 7welcome home their Junior D hockey team. The Zurich Citizens' News announced that the Exeter Hawks captured the Ontario championship after a four year absence. They ousted the defending champion Stayner Siskins in four straight games in a sur- prising comeback. St. Marys has finally received approval for an area community centre. Five municipalities will be in- volved in the project and it is scheduled to be ready for use by the end of November. The St, Marys Journal - Argus reported that the joint agreement resulted in ad- ditional community grants from the provincial gover- nment. The extra $128,000 will be used to pay off the St. Marys council for the pur- chase of the James Street arena and also pay for the architect's fees. Elma Township residents have not been as lucky in their arena proposals. The Listowel Banner said that the council refused the Atwood Lions Club proposal for a new arena. Despite the fact that the Lions Club has collected a considerable amount of money to help finance the construction, a December plebiscite showed that residents turned down the arena by a vote of 998 to 552. The Kincardine News announced a danger warning to area residents since United States Navy Flares have been turning up on Lhc Lakeshore again this year. The Kin- cardine News reported that Ontario Police Commission chairman, Elmer Bell will notify town council of the decision following the police officer's appeal on April 19, in Toronto. Hendgrson - appealed the decision and conviction handed down by Kincardine's publie--'protection committee last November when he was found guilty of one count of neglect of duty. As penalty the committee demoted the officer from sergeant to first class constable. The Mitchell Public Utilities Commission has come up with a solution to solve the problem of lost fire hydrants. The Mitchell Advocate explained that 60 fire hydrants were covered with snow last winter and were difficult to find. However by the end of this October the hydrants, will be displaying red signs atop long iron rods. This will aid firemen in immediately locating them in the event of fire. 61 Orange St. South, Clinton 484.7014 "Flowers for every occasion" CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, MAY 5, 1977 Metric speed signs to go in effect Sept. 30 About 300 metric speed limit signs have been prepared and are ready to go up Sept. 30 County engineer Jim Britnell told county councillors last week. The .signs are marked in kilometers per hour instead of miles per hour. The new signs will read 50, rather than 30 in towns and 80 rather than 50, on highways. They will bear a km -h . designation in the corner to remind motorists of the new standard of measurement, Mr. Britnell said. He also reported: "It looks like we're going to get some money back for the tough winter." The county has applied for more than $51,000 in extra subsidy for winter control costs, though it has not yet received the allocation from the ministry of transport. The council decided not to support a resolution from Essex County asking the ministry to base the extra subsidy on "other than the abnormal winter of 1976." The subsidy is hard enough to get now, road committee chairman Robert Lyons declared. "If we change it again, we might not get it in time for next year." Mr. Britnell added that any gain through changing the funding formula would probably be slight, since the amount of money to be allocated is fixed. He also said the effects of the severe winter on the road and bridge construction and maintenance program are not yet fully known, warning it may be necessary to cut back on some items to stay within the budget.
