What you think
(continued from page 4)
What you did not do, and
apparently do not plan to do,
is give parents and concerned
citizens a chance to
demonstrate their support for
openmindedness in the choice
of curricula.
You said that you and your
fellow-trustess hope to come
to a decision about the books
under discussion at your
meeting next Monday night.

If you, or any trustee,
should choose to condemn
any book without having read
it in its entirety you will
demonstrate to all that you
will have given in to a
minority pressure group.
That would be against all
basic principles of
democracy.
My daughter is eleven
years old and in Grade 5 at
Clinton Public School. She
' already knows most of the
"filthy language" used in the
books in question, but she also
already knows what is
sociallytacceptable and what
is not. She has not read any
Steinbeck, Salinger,
Laurence or Munro' She
picked the words up in the
schoolyard. By the time, she
reaches high school she will
have long ago put these words
in their proper Perspective
and be able to pass over them
as.students who spoke at your
meeting are quite evidently
able to do, in order to get at
the substance the various
authors convey in their works
of truly worthwhile merit.
Those who seek evil will find
evil.
Those who seek good will find
good.
Yours very truly,
