We can supply your formal clothes for men PAGE 2--CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, THURSDAY, APRIL 28, 1977 Lions pick slate There's a quotation "The chain is as strong as its weakest link". Well, all the links around the Signal -Star Publishing Company, to which your News -Record, belongs, must have been pretty strong last Wed- nesday. Some of you may have noticed a slight delay in receiving your paper, noticeably the ones who are accustomed to picking up same Wednesday evening. Our printing press at Goderich suffered a break- down, physically, which in turn almost caused our supervisor, John Buchanan, to have a breakdown (mentally). ,Hoever, John's forte is coming through when the chips are down, so following a few long distance negotiations, your News - Record, along with four other papers, made a detour via Woodstock for printing and arrived back at the office on Albert Street in the wee small hours of Thursday morning. With full co-operation from our mailers, Annie Hartman, Wayne Hartman assisted by Diane Collins, all came in to work at 5:30 a.m. and we were able to have the bulk of our local papa in at the post office and off on the rural routes by 8 a.m. +++ An interesting house guest with Mrs. Fred Sloman and Margaret during the past weekend was Elizabeth Wilmot, noted authoress of the book "Meet Me At, The Station." Miss Wilmot met with friends on Saturday, and while her visit was short, she hopes to be back for a return visit before very long. +++ On Monday, April 25, District 2 of the Hospital Auxiliaries *Association of Ontario held its Spring Conference at South Waterloo Memorial Hospital, Cam- bridge. Attending as representatives of The Clinton Hospital Women's Auxiliary, were Lina Cochrane, Margaret Coventry, Helen Davies, Kathleen Elliott, Kay. Hanly and Freda .choenhals. Administrator, Doug Coventry, was also invited to attend. Each delegation gave a slide presentation of its activities and it was reported that your hospital auxiliary's offering made a com- t , a$,r t' . Anyway, there was something in the Offing at the time. As readers will note from the advertisement in this week's paper - the student body will be presenting "Variety" on May 5 in the school auditorium so why not plan to attend. The' concert is just what its title denotes - a potpourri of musical items. + + + This just wouldn't be my column if animals, especially dogs, didn't. paw their way into it somewhere between the first line and the last. Ask editor, Jim Fitzgerald, if that is not a fact: He is very long- suffering over my four -footed affections. Therefore, being a member of the Ontario Humane Society, I cannot help but make note of the following story which came to our desk this week. While Robert Johnston of RR 1 Clinton was walking along the railroad tracks near Holmesville, he noticed something moving beside the track. A closer look revealed two tiny black puppies huddled together on the ties. Apparently abandoned, their life span would have been quickly shortened had Mr. and Mrs. Johnston not given them a refuge in their home. If anyone at all has any information regarding these two castaways or if anyone would like to adopt one or both of the puppies, please contact the Johnstons at 482- 9135. Thank you. + ++ The Family Care Workers held the April 21 meeting at Clinton Hospital Board Room with an increased enrollment on Thursday, April 21. Work of the agency was discussed. The speaker for the evening was Dr. Molaury of Wingham who discussed the.subject of cancer. The next meeting will be held May 19. + ++ On April 19, the Clinton Independent Order of Odd - fellows held its regular meeting in the Lodge Hall. The special event of the evening was the draw for one quarter side of beef. Drawing was made by one of the younger members, Norman Shepherd,' and the winner was Mrs. Howard Johnson bf Mary Street Clinton. Following the meeting lunch Was, served by the April group. + + + Considering evil - also consider the following quotation by Sydney J. Harris "Once we assuage our conscience by calling something a `necessary evil' it begins toook more and more neces ry and less and less evil." "It's better than school," said Marni Tugwell, 13'and Patrick Murray, 12 when they spent last Thursday on the Yarm of Mr. and Mrs. Ed beeves. However, bottle feeding a three -day-old calf was part of their studies for farm day in science. The day was part of the activities for Education Week at the Clinton Public School. (News - Record photo) Historical Society meets The Huron County Historical Society met in the Council Chamber Clinton, Tuesday, April 19 at 8 p.m. with a good attendance. Mr. David McClure, -president, being ill, the meeting was chaired by Mr. Joseph Hogan of Exeter. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Mrs. Doris Batkin, secretary - treasurer. The financial report was also given and approved. After a short business session, Mrs. Charles Nelson read a paper on the life of the late Dr. Robert Coats, Dominion statistician for some years. He was the son of Robert Coats of the famous thread -making family of Paisley, Scotland. He lived for some years as a young child in Goderich township in the house now owned by Miss Isabelle Fraser. He was the recipient of many honours during his long service to Canada. Not' the InSt was the unveiling of a plaque to his memory Sept, 18, 19 Gat Clinton. Two very enjoyable musical numbers were given by Mr. Wilfred Jervis and Mr. Watt Webster, the latter on the harmonica and Mr. Jervis on the "hones", Mrs. Doris Batkin then gave an interesting and hilarious talk on Clinton in by- gone days, its characters, its happenings and curious names of various sections of the town. To name a few these latter are Vinegar Hill, Devil's half acre, Little England etc. Mrs, Omber Papp thanked all who had made the evening so enjoyable. Mr. Lois Elliott, president -of Clinton Women's Institute who had welcomed all present, then invited 'everyone to remain r luncheon served by the ladies of the Institute. CLINTON Six months ago I got myself involved in a Beauty Club in Toronto and since that time have been sent bills, bills and more bills for a kit that I don't even have! When it arrived originally it was broken so I promptly returned, it, expecting another one in its place, but no such luck, only these bills! Finally I got one of those "pay or else" letters from their collection agency. To say that I'm completely fed up, is to put it' mildly, so any help that you can offer will be appreciated. The explanation that we finally got from this firm puts the blame on their computer. They send this reader their, "most sincere apologies", and told us to inform her, "that this account is now closed, and that a refund cheque in full will be sent right away." We've been anxiously awaiting a settlement from The Motor Vehicles Accident Claims Fund since last June and we badly need this money so if you can help to speed it up we will be most grateful. Part of the delay has been due to the fact that the ap- plication to The Motor Vehicles Accident Claim* Fund was not complete, but since that missing information concerning the uninsured driver has now been received, an early settlement cheque should be issued in the very near future. 8 Son T.Pryae «d.
