While Simmons' ac- tions were directed mainly to the press, the motion ef- fectively eliminated the right • of any citizen to attend the session. The decision carne as no surprise to the Exeter Times - Advocate. Simmons had previously suggested that he would bar the press from a meeting he was to chair in the absence of Mayor Shaw if the editor failed to provide an apology for having revealed that council met in secret O session to make their decision on moving the police out of the town hall. When he was advised that he couldn't bar the press from a public meeting of council, he said he would have the editor, Bill Batten escorted from the meeting by the police if necessary. That situation failed to materialize as the T -A editor was on holiday for the meeting which was chaired by Simmons. The Reeve did ask reporter Ross Haugh prior to the meeting if he had an apology, and the latter said he did not. When Sim- mons said he may ask him to leave the meeting, Councillor Bar, b Bell overheard the discussion and suggested If council not get involved in that type of situation. However, with the editor back on the job this week, Simmons quickly moved to have him removed from the meeting and council sup- ported the action. Planning will get underway for the reconstruction of Josephine Street following tho • decision by Wingham Town Council to proceed with preliminary engineering of the project, according to the Wingham Advance -Times.. Council voted last week to appoint B.M. Ross and Associates as consulting engineers for the project *and authorized them to begin drawing up plans. Cost of this 0,, service is estimated at ap- proximately $15,000. Reeve Joe Kerr and Councillor Allan Harrison opposed the motion to go ahead with planning the reconstruction. "Where will the money come from?" Mr. Harrison asked, noting one • • • sewer project has just been finished and another is planned. Mr. Kerr objected to put- ting all the money into the front street, saying a lot of other streets in town also need fixing. A letter from B.M. Ross estimates the cost of replacing the street, in- cluding sidewlks, curb ,and gutters and storm sewers, at $550,000. About $90,000 of the cost would have to be borne by 'the town, with the remaining $460,000 corning from the province. Mitchell Mayor Harold Jordan cast a tie breaking vote at last week's Council meeting giving local developer William Myers the green light on a rezoning application which will allow the addition of several units to an apartment complex on Coulton Drive, according to the Mitchell Advocate, A delegation of ratepayers, who reside in the vicinity of the proposed development, raised strong objections in a formal brief read by their spokesman John Taylor. Claiming the erection of "additional barn sized buildings in such a restricted space could Only do harm to the real estate value of neigh- bouring private homes," Mr. Taylor urged Council to reject the application and abide by the present zoning designation of the property for single family dwellings. The administrator of Listowel Memorial Hospital, Leonard Hall, was distressed by the pathetic example of interest shown at the district health council steering committee meeting on March 30, according to a report in the Listowel Banner. The steering committee is holding a series of meetings to get the view of ordinary citizens on the proposed formation of a District Health Council in the combined area of Huron Perth counties. Approximately 25 people attended the meeting held at Listowel Central Public School; most of them were in public office. Two choices are offered to the people, they can either join Middlesex County or any other county that already has a District Health Council and be "swallowed up", because Perth has less population, or form an alliance between Huron and Perth Counties to Alp *Vanastra Voicings By Diane Black Vanastra Resource Centre Different social service agencies have banded together to serve the Vanastra Community. The meeting will be held Tuesday April 19, 1977 at the Vanastra Christian Church at 1:30 p.m. Babysitting will be provided. The specific programs will be up to the outcome of the meeting. It seems that the agencies mentioned above will be open to anything that will provide more accessible service' to the community or - and encourage development of preventative measures in dealing with neighbourhood concerns.
