Londesboro News: Easter Services Attract crowds
United Church
There was an excellent
attendance ,at the Good
Friday Service held in the
United Church at 8 p.m.
Friday evening. A very in-
spiring service built on the
theme of `Penitence' based on
the 27th chapter of Matthew.
The service was conducted
by Rev. Stanley MacDonald
with responses by the
congregation. The five
candlesilit at,the front of the
.church represented the four
Gospels and the person 'Of
Christ. The extinguishing of
the candles symbolized the
guilt of man not spreading the
Gospel and leaving man in
darkness. The congregation
was invited to come forward
and receive communion.
Mrs. Glen McGregor was
organist and Bonnie Jewett
and Barbara Bosman sang
two duets, "Go to Dark
Gethsemane" and "For All
My Sins". Jim Doherty of
Clinton was soloist and sang,
"Lift High the 'Cross' and
"Were You There When They
Crucified My Lord". John
Lawson and Bob Jamieson
were ushers and Wayne
Hulley was in charge of the.
lighting effects.
On Sunday morning the
church was filled when
service was continued from
Friday, celebrating the rising
of Christ from the dead.
Welcoming into the sanctuary
were Garnet Wright and Nick
Whyte. Ushers were Darrell
Shobbrook, Edward Riley,
Kevin and Keith Howatt. In
charge of baby and toddler
care was Brenda Miller.
The choir anthems were
well rendered, "Easter -
Bells" and "Joy Dawned on
Easter Day" with Mrs.°Allen
Shaddick as choir leader and
Mrs. Glen McGregor
organist.
Rev. McDonald's children's
story was "The Risen Christ
from the Tomb". His
message was "Are You
Afraid of Easter?"
Memorial flowers were
placed in loving memory of
Jack Mead by his family, Ann
Fai!rservice by her mother
arid brother David, Bert
Brunsdon by his wife and
daughter Bette and by Burns
UCW.
Next Sunday, Cub and
Scouts will hold their annual
. parade. All parents and
friends are invited to attend.
UCW Meeting
The Londesboro UCW held
its general meetin�jc�n
Monday April 4.
President Helen Lawson
welcomed all and opened the
meting with poem "Easter
Glory" and hymn. "Ride
On", with Hattie Wood at the
piano. Scripture was read by
]V rgaret Whyte, hymn
"Jesus Christ is Risen" and
prayer by Helen Lawson.
The highlight of the evening
was a skit "Madam X" with
Nona Pipe, Helen Lawson,
Marjorie Duizer and Joan
Whyte taking the principal
roles. A reading "Spring
Meadow" by Helen Lawson
followed.
The minutes for the
executive meeting were read
by secretary Doreen Carter
and Hattie Wood gave the
treasurer's report and told
the gathering that $674.80 was
in the treasury.
A number of thank you
notes were received from
Nelson McClure, Shirley
Lyon. Edythe Beacon, Laura
Lyon, George Gilfillan, Tom
Allen and Mildred Hollinger.
A letter of thanks was
received from Rev. George.
Cooper for hymn hooks sent
to them at Tanzania through
.Maline Hunking. A
photograph of their church
was enclosed.
An invitation was extended
to Walton UCW Thank -
offering on April 17th at 8
p.m. and to Clinton Wesley -
W illis and Ontario Street on
April 24th, at Ontario Street
Church. A letter from Alma
College on their 100th
Anniversary was read and it
was moved to donate $25.00 to
the college. The Westminster
weekend is May 27-29,
delegate is Florence Cart-
wright.
The buying committee was
instructed to purchase a
salad maker. All United
Church Coffee spoons are
sold. It was resolved to
inquire about adopting a
child. Brenda Radford
reported that a number of
banquets are forthcoming.
The meeting closed with the
Benediction. A contest was
held naming pictures of
people of importance. Lunch
was served by Hattie Wood,
Ida Durnin and Dora Shob-
brook.
Berean Unit
The Berean Unit held their
Easter meeting on Tuesday,
April 5th at 2 p.m. The
Worship centered on an
Easter setting with a cross in
front of the drape and with
Faster lilies • and yellow
spring flowers. President
Hattie Wood welcomed all.
The Devotions and
progr•a m were .taker 5y Nona
Pipe and Ida Durnin, opening
with readings "April Smiles"
and "April" by Nona. The
theme was "A Cross Against
,The Sky", and the hymn "All
Hail The Power of Jesus'
Name", was sung. The
scripture and meditation
were read by Ida and hymn
"Christ The Lord Is Risen''.
Ida Durnin read the Easter
message by Padre Young.
Nona remarked on how
Pilgrims observed Palm
Sunday. The hymn "When I
'Survey The''Wondrous Cross"
was sung. Nona gave the
reading of how two pieces of
wood formed the old rugged
cross, and the record was
played "The Old. Rugged
Cross". Devotions closed with
prayer.
Hattie Wood conducted the
business, and thanked Nona
and Ida for the inspiring
devotions. The minutes of
February and March
meetings were read by Nona
Pipe. -
Correspondence consisted
of a letter of thanks for 12
hymn books sent to Tanzania.

Cubs
The 1st Londesboro Cub
Pack with their leaders, cub
master Stan McDonald,
Leaders Norman Cartwright.,
Wayne klulley, David
Armstrong, Michael Overholt
and Dennis Fothergill visited
the Ontario Provincial Police
office in Goderich on Tuesday
afternoon.
Constable Wilson con-
ducted a tour of the building
and explained the equipment.
A film on safety was also
shown. The boys and leaders
derived a great deal from the
tour and the help of Constable
Wilson.
Athletic Club
A meeting of the Lon-
desboro Athletic Club was
held in the Londesboro Hall
on April 6. Keith Allen and
John Radford reported on
their meeting with Hullett:
Township council. They
reported that council agreed
to let their name be used for
grant purposes and anything
that would save money.
Discussion : took place
regarding lights, type and
number Of towers, etc. It was
moved by Tielman
Westerhout and seconded by
'Murray Adams that we in-
stall flood lights on the
athletic field at Hullett
Central School (carried) It
was moved by Tom Duizer
and seconded by John
Radford thatt.: we install 6
towers with 12 lights at 1500W
(carried) -

and seconded by Jim John-

up of .John Radford, Keith

Honoured On
35th Wedding
Anniversary
The family of Mr. and Mrs
Lorne Hunking honoured
them on Saturday night at the
home of their daughter, Mr.
and Mrs. Tom Duizer assisted
by Mr. and Mrs. Art Hunking,
Centralia. They entertained
his sisters Mr. and Mrs. John
Riley and Mr. and -Mrs. Ben
Riley and other close friends.
A social time was held and
some cards played.
The couple received some,
lovely gifts. Lorne thanked all
for the evening and gifts.
Lunch was served.
On Sunday they were
-treated to a family dinner at
the home of Mr. and Mr's.
Duizer. Present were Mrs.
Hunking's mother, Mrs.
Charlotte Bell of Blyth, Mr.
and Mrs. Tom Duizer, Laurel,
Lisa, Stephen and Shannon,
Mr. and Mrs. Art Hunking,
"Todd and Tara, Centralia,
and Murray Hunking of
Sarnia.

returned home on Saturday

where she had surgery on
