TUURSDAY, APRIL 7,1977 Mrs. Bonnie Knowles, of "Compassion" showed slides of Bangladesh at the April meeting of the Hensall United Church Women held in the Fellowship Hall on Monday, April 4. 150,000 • children in Bangladesh go blind every year through lack of Vitamin A; there is only one doctor to every 100,000 people; whole communities of many thousands do not have the services of either doctor or • nurse, and many of the rampant diseases are caused by contaminated water. Disaster has followed disaster in the 1970s and the Compassion is one of the relief and rehabilitation programs carried out in that country. Compassion has two fun- ctions. To take care of children in destitute countries and to conduct Evangelistic Outreach Campaigns. In this way, they endeavour to give both physical and spiritual aid. This being the Easter meeting, Joy was the subject of the devotional given by Mrs. J. McAllister and Mrs. F. Slade. Joy is the Christian message at both Christmas and Easter - without Joy our worship is an empty shell. We - should endeavour to recap- ture the joy of the first Christians as they chanted, "He is Risen". Mrs. Knowles was in- troduced by Mrs. Audrey Christie and thanked by Mrs. - Doreen Spencer. Mrs. Laird Mickle accompanied the hymns and Mrs. Belva Fuss sang, "There is a green hill" accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Gertie Middleton. The meeting, was presided._ over by Mrs. Grace Drum- mond, first vice-president, who conducted the business. The Beef Barbecue will be held on May 25, proceeds to go to either the window fund or the manse fund. A new committee is to be '.formed, "The Church in the Society", which will "include much of the work which we have been doing in the past, such as visiting and packing. bales, and some new interests also. U.C.W. are urged to write to their M.P.s etc. regarding the Universal Coding in grocery stores. A special meeting is to be held on June 20 when neighbouring U.C.W.s will be entertained. It is hoped to arrange a concert, to be given in the Sanctuary, to be held in the fall which the Brant '`Men of Song", will present. Both ladies and men's choirs will take part. Mrs. Drummond thanked all who had taken part and after the Mizpah Benediction, a social hour was held during which a dainty lunch was served. Fund raising The Hensall and District Community Centre Fund Raising Committee has been formed to provide funds for our new• Community Centre. The committee is made up as follows: Eric ..Luther, chairmarih Dave Shurman, co-chairman; Doug Mock, secretary; Carl W McMahon, treasurer; Butch Hoffman, Harry Klungel, Doug Shirray, Bob Caldwelk" Residents of" Hensall and the surrounding Townships have been advised by letter of the project costs and finan- cing plans which are as follows. Estimated cost of new community centre $600,000; to be covered by Provincial Grants $150,000; public subscription $150,000; Wintario $300,000. A door to door campaign will be conducted shortly in Hensall by the Kinsmen Club. Butch Hoffman and Harry Klungel will canvass the area businesses. The area town- ships will organize their own door to door canvass and this will be co-ordinated by Doug Shirray and Bob Caldwell. Any firms doing business with, or supplying product to our local businesses will be contacted for a donation. The committee will require the generous,support of all area residentand businesses to ensure the success of this campaign. The results of the campaign will be advised in • local newspapers on a regular basis. ,, were dedicated and the roll call taken. An invitation to attend the .,rneeting at Seaforth on April 21 was read and accepted - Mrs. Hugh Jack of Hamilton will be the guest speaker. The Synodical •is to. be held in Knox Rresbyterian Church cip April 12 and 13. It is hoped that as many members as possible will attend. This month the W.M.S. will entertain at the Queensway Nursing Home and more ladies are asked to come out on Monday afternoons to help. at the Nursing Home. The meeting was closed with the Lord's Prayer. 4-H The Bedtime Beauties, Hensall 2 4-H Club, met at the United Church and for the roll call had to show pattern, fabric and trim, telling the name of the fabric, its content --and care. After a discussion, a pic- ture for the cover of the book was decided on. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, April 5, 1977. +++ The next meeting of the Three Links, Senior Citizens, will be held at the I.O.O.F. Hall on Tuesday, April 12 when a series of three films will be shown All Lenior 77 Palm Sunday' service at Hensall United Church was conducted by Rev. Don Beck, who took as his sermon topic, "A King of Different Sorts". Followers in the Kingdom of Christ must Trust and Serve. The mixed choir very ably sang, "Ride on, King Jesus". Communion Service will be held on Maundy Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. for Hensall and Chislehurst and an Easter Sunrise Service will be held for both congregations at 6:30 a.m. at the Hensall Church. Huronview Auxiliary The March meeting of the Huronview Auxiliary was held a week early and at- tendance could be improved at the next meeting whkh will be held at Huronview on April 18. Plans are being rrlade for the Annual Bazaar on June 1 and volunteer helpers are bac:ly needed. For further details, please contact Mrs. Wilfred Colclough at 482-7627. Personals Mrs. Minnie Noakes has left to visit her brother, George (Dodie) Sangster, of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, who has been seriously ill in the hospital there for some weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Parkasn Malik have moved into their new home on Richmond Citizens in the community ar'e.._.North, the former residence invited. of Mr. Hugh Love. We hope they enjoy their new. surroundings. The annual meeting of the Hensall Women's Institute will be held in the Legion Hall on Wednesday, April 13 when reports and the new §late, of officers will be presented. Membership is open to all women of the community. The firm of Gerrie Glenn Incorporated, of Lucknow, has been surveying the property south of the Post Office for possible con- struction of 18 more new apartments. WMS meets At the Easter meeting of the W.M.S. of Carmel Presbyterian Church held on Monday, April 4; Mrs. Mac Dougall spoke about the work of a missionary, Lucia M. Baker and also on Friend- ship. St. John chapter 19vv 16- 24 was read by Mrs. Emma Campbell. and appropriate Easter hymns were sung. 1�rs. Blanche Dougall read a piece on "The Praying Hands" followed by a poem, "Fellowship of Friends". Mrs. Harvey Hyde, president, presided at the meeting and ten members were present. London for several weeks, returned to his home last week. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Holland, Gwen and Michael of Clinton were recent visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sangster and Brad. Church notes Rev. W. D. Jarvis con- ducted service in Carmel Presbyterian Church on Palm Sunday, speaking on the subject "Even the stones would cry out". Miss Brenda Pepper led the choir at the organ. Rev. Jarvis baptized the twin sons of Fred and Sandra Funk, Brian Frederick and Michael Edward. Berry Mrs. Harold Coleman was the ladies' high score winner at the IOOF Brucefield euchre party held last Friday evening. The largest crowd of the season attended. Mrs. Ed Godkin was the ladies' low score winner, while Sandy Piper won the men's high score. Elmer Frick was the men's low winner. and Cal Horton , won men'slow hands.
