PA iE 14-,-CLINTON NEWS -RECO ' D. TUURSDAY, APRIL 7,1977
Mrs. Bonnie Knowles, of
"Compassion" showed slides
of Bangladesh at the April
meeting of the Hensall United
Church Women held in the
Fellowship Hall on Monday,
April 4.
150,000 • children in
Bangladesh go blind every
year through lack of Vitamin
A; there is only one doctor to
every 100,000 people; whole
communities of many
thousands do not have the
services of either doctor or
• nurse, and many of the
rampant diseases are caused
by contaminated water.
Disaster has followed
disaster in the 1970s and the
Compassion is one of the
relief and rehabilitation
programs carried out in that
country.
Compassion has two fun-
ctions. To take care of
children in destitute countries
and to conduct Evangelistic
Outreach Campaigns. In this
way, they endeavour to give
both physical and spiritual
aid.
This being the Easter
meeting, Joy was the subject
of the devotional given by
Mrs. J. McAllister and Mrs.
F. Slade. Joy is the Christian
message at both Christmas
and Easter - without Joy our
worship is an empty shell. We -
should endeavour to recap-
ture the joy of the first
Christians as they chanted,
"He is Risen".
Mrs. Knowles was in-
troduced by Mrs. Audrey
Christie and thanked by Mrs.
- Doreen Spencer. Mrs. Laird
Mickle accompanied the
hymns and Mrs. Belva Fuss
sang, "There is a green hill"
accompanied at the piano by
Mrs. Gertie Middleton.
The meeting, was presided._
over by Mrs. Grace Drum-
mond, first vice-president,
who conducted the business.
The Beef Barbecue will be
held on May 25, proceeds to
go to either the window fund
or the manse fund. A new
committee is to be '.formed,
"The Church in the Society",
which will "include much of
the work which we have been
doing in the past, such as
visiting and packing. bales,
and some new interests also.
U.C.W. are urged to write
to their M.P.s etc. regarding
the Universal Coding in
grocery stores. A special
meeting is to be held on June
20 when neighbouring
U.C.W.s will be entertained.
It is hoped to arrange a
concert, to be given in the
Sanctuary, to be held in the
fall which the Brant '`Men of
Song", will present. Both
ladies and men's choirs will
take part.
Mrs. Drummond thanked
all who had taken part and
after the Mizpah Benediction,
a social hour was held during
which a dainty lunch was
served.
