Through the other weeklies
Having Just survived a
winter, Wingham'S
Businessmen's Association is
already making plans for the
next. The group is looking
into the purchase of new
Christmas decorations for the
main street, says last week's
Wingham Advance -Times.
The Businessmen have
'agreed to pay for half of the
purchasing cost up to $3,000
fer lights and ornaments to
decorate_44 , street lamps
along the main thoroughfare.
Each decoration is to cost
about $50.
In Brussels, a Kitchener
construction firm has been
hired to construct the new
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre for
$695,000. Construction is to
begin the end of April and be
completed by October 15,
according to the Brussels
Post. The community will
have to "raise $218,000 towards
the construction costs, with
the remainder coming from
grants under the Community
Centres Act and Wintario.
About $170,000 has been
raised locally.
Huron County Board of
Education's 22.8 percent
education levy was approved
by Blyth village council, but
only after many bitter
complaints, reports the Blyth
Standard.
A councillor's suggestion to,
pay only eight percent of the
increase, corresponding to
the Anti -Inflation Board
guidelines, was turned down
as the village would simply be
charged interest on the un-
paid portion of the levy. The
Board of Education was
compared to the Mafia in its
tactics of demanding money
and the council voiced
disbelieve in how costs could
keep rising while school
enrollment keeps falling.
Last year's 30 percent levy
increase was to have, been
much higher than this year's
figure.
Exeter town council has
come under public criticism
in its move to purchase a new
house for the police depar-
tment. The decision for the
"purchase was made in a
closed session of council after
an agreement could not be
‘reached with the Exeter
Heritage Foundation, who
own the town hall, the present
location . ofP the police
department. According to
last week's Exeter Times -
Advocate, the •Heritage
Foundation was demanding
an inflated rent for the
coming year after council had
given them the town hall, to
restore, for free last year.
Council turned down the
rental figure of $351, up from
$200 last year. The Exeter
Police Commission was
prepared to pay $250. Council
will purchase the new house
for the Exeter Police
Department for $23,000.
Last week's Ljstowel
Banner reports the in-
vestigation continues into the
murder of 46 -year-old Ber-
nice Stewart•who was found
beaten and with her neck
broken in her car in
February. Rumours that
travelled as far as Windsor
and Sarnia reported the
woman had been murdered
by one of the town's leading
citizens who was then sup-
posed to have committed
suicide. All visions, rumours,

controversial Glengowan
Dam will probably be built,
the Association has asked
that council look into the dam'

homeowners whose
basements were damaged by
the sanitary sewer back up a
few weeks ago, will be
compensated for damages,
reports the Seaforth
Expositor. The town council
says it does not know who will
pay the damages, but assures
the home owners that they
will be compensated. The
firm that engineered the
drain has been criticized for
poor construction, but has
responded to the charges,
say ,ng that illegal con-
nections to,*the system, or
manhole covers lifted off to
drain off surface water
probably caused the back up.
The firm claims there was no
error in the design of the
sewer.
