a good attendance in spite of a.-.. three years, produce every
stormy night.
Mrs. Durst opened the
meeting on a very cheerful
note. Robins are here. "The
asphalt of the earth opens up
• and there is a crocus."
• The new year books were
given out and it was an-
nounced that. "Perry Como"
is the named tulip that will be
given each member in Sep-
tember.
Ross Middleton was the
guest speaker and generously
gave his knowledge of the
growing and caring of apple
trees: how to mend the trees
• girdled by mice during the
winter, and the art of grafting
and pruning.
Apples have changed
greatly over the years -
"Paula red" is now con-
sidered the best early apple
and "Ida Red", a better
year, and give larger apples.
Many more trees may be ,
planted per acre and are
easier to care for 'in picking
and spraying.
Mr. Middleton said blue
berries may be grown in our
district with soil adjusted to
suit its needs.
Mrs. Pullen then showed
the proper way to Rrune rose
bushes.
Door prises were donated
by Mrs. Fingl,and and Mrs.
McCann. Winners were Mr.
Harry Baker, Mrs. Florence
Pullen, Miss Florence
Jamieson and Mrs. Jean
Livermore.

Wendy Brown...: worker
1
Volunteer workers
wear many hats
Bythe Volunteer
Bureau
The Huron Volunteer
Bureau would like to in-
troduce one gf'our volunteers.
She is Wendy Brown of
Clinton, among the first to list
with the Bureau after it
opened.
You probably think of
volunteers as predominantly
middle-aged women. In the
past this was the case, but the
situation today is changing —
everybody is getting into the
act. We want to stress that the
main thing in volunteer
service is your desire to help.' -
Enthusiasm can go a long
way toward standing in for
experience.
Wendy is 20 years old. She
is a good example of someone
who has overcome her own
problems and wants to do
something fop somebody else.
She has a history of heart
trouble, and has suffered
several strokes. She has a
partial paralysis of the left
side. Wendy came to the'
Volunteer Bureau to offer her
services for whatever she
might do to help out. And this,
in spite of a considerable
handicap which makes it
nearly impossible for her to
compete in the tight job -
market with persons in the
bloom of health.
She has done alot of varied
tasks for us, such as filling in
at the Bureau office while the
regular staff' is busy
elsewhere. She has been able
to suggest people and
organizations to approach for,
assistance with our Volunteer
Program. She has rounded up
a number of other workers for
the Bureau, and runs general
errands. One of her most
important functions has been
as an oral reader; she makes
tapes for the blind, including
reference - material reading
for our Director, Mary Ann
Kowbuz.
This perhaps gives you an
idea of the range of things you
can contribute. Many of our
requests are for volunteeer
drivers, since this is *such a
widely spread rural area with
a small and spotty
population. But there are
other things that need doing
too, right in your own neigh=
bourhood. Thisis by no
means a program confined to
urban centres; the Bureau is
set up toserve all residents of
Huron County.
If you need our help, or
want to offer your services as
a Volunteer, please call the
Huron Volunteer Bureau at
482-3037.

and Gerry Black.
