Some were suc- cessful in completing 12 hours of -skating. Mrs. Lillian Penhale returned home after visiting at the home of her daughter, Doris, Mrs. Mel Bennett, Mel and family of Goderich. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Pollock of London and Mr. Ernie Pollock, Varna visited with Mrs. Ssie Pollock on Sun- day. `- Mrs. Roy Fitzsimmons and Terry attended St. James (Westminster) Anglican Church, London on Sunday for the confirmation of By Nina Haw Mr. and Mrs. Harry Baker returned home after an en- joyable holiday in Tucson, Arizona. While there, they went to Petrified Forest, Grand Canyon, Boulder Dam also to Mexico for a day. They also attended to rodeo at Tucson. They accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Scot- chmer to Tucson and flew home. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Knight, Sandra and Kathryn. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Latimer r of Downsview visited over the weekend with Mrs. Ethel Knight. Mr. and Mrs. E. Durnin of Goderich accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Wm. D. Armstrong to Nashville, Tennessee where they spent a few days returning home Sunday evening. Mr. and • Mrs. Don Haw, Anne and Cathy have arrived home after spending an en- joyable holiday in Kissimmee, Florida. A number of friends from here, who were also on vacation, visited them at their apart- ment. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey McDougal. also "visited with them by telephone. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Riddell, who have spent two months in Kissimmee, Florida, visited with their daughter, Marilyn, Don and family on Thursday, before continuing their journey to their Nome near Dundalk. Both families had the pleasure of spending their holiday at the same apart- ment. Mr. and Mrs. Reg Francis have returned home after a Darlene Smale by Bishop Harold Appleyard. They were joined by her Godmother, Karen Fitzsimons, 'Carl Humphries,. Bob Logan and Gerry, as well as her mother, Sylvia, brother John and sister Laura. There were 23 candidates. Coffee hour was held in the Great Hall afterwards. Sylvia served a delicious luncheon in her home af- terwards in honour of Darlene. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Merrill, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Wise, Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. Stan. Mcllwain of Goderich, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Hodgert of Seaforth spent the weekend at Geneva Park near Orillia. Rev. A. F Jewel of Kingsville visited on Monday, with his sister, Mrs. Lulu Smith. United Church news Renovations are continuing in the kitchen of St. Andrews United Church and the members of the UCW are hopeful they will be com- pleted for their winners dinner on Thurs., Mar. 17. The winners, the result of the penny collections, are to prepare and serve the meal while the losers entertain. Skate-a-thQn is bigsuec+ The Lioness Skate -a -thou to raise funds to repair the arena was held Saturday, March 5, and was described as atremendous success. There were 108 skaters taking part from ages 5 to over 45. The stamina of the skaters was admirable as 40 of them skated the 12 hours. The youngest skater to complete the 12 hours was' Kevin Dunn aged 6, while the oldest was John Siertsema aged??? Marg and Joe Mayman did three hours each. One of the youngest skaters was Jody Merner at age 5 who skated for nine hours. "We got very tired just watching." Hot drinks, cold drinks, and donuts helped to keep the skaters going. The Lioness Club say thanks to everyone; especially the skaters, the mothers, the rink rats and all who made the day so ;8U cessful. d''' The skaters are ask . get their pledges collected right away so that the f1nai figure can be calculated. Lions plan break'up contest Brownies, clubs enjoy skating Bayfield Brownies and Cubs_ met in the Arena Thursday night and had a lot of fun at a skating party. After an ihours skating the L.A. served hot dogs and hot chocolate,' much enjoyed by the young people. The week before, the Scouts, • along with their leaders John Siertsema and David Renner enjoyed a skating party. The boys prepared and served . their own lunch af- terwards. Winners in the "A" Group were Bob Orr's team who played off against Joe Koene's team. Skip Bob Orr, vice Bill Talbot and Madelon Mclllwain took top honours. • In the "B" Group playoff, Randy McLinchey lost lost to Morris Sauve's rink. Skip Morris Sauve, vice, Barb Telford and Scotty McVean and Kelvin Merner won with a comfortable lead. All rinks played very well and had a great day together. Following the bonspiel a meeting was held for all curlers for their 1977 com- mittee. Elected to office were: pres. Jerry Uniac; secretary -treasurer, .Alice Brandon; advisor, Randy McLinchey and work com- mittee chairman, Joe Koene, Grant Turner was elected to represent the Curling Association on the arena repairs committee to be advisor to take back the in- formation to the Club. World Day of Prayer -_Despite the weather, a good attendance was reported at the World Day of Prayer Service in Trinity Anglican Church Friday, March 4. Mrs. Moira Couper spoke on this years theme "Love In Action". Taking part were Doris Reddock, Kathleen Siertsema, Violet Carter, Bayfield Mr. and Mrs. Albert Craig, Mrs. Judy Layton, Joanne and Sheryl attended the christening of the formers granddaughter, four month old Jennifer Ann Craig, Sunday morning in Wesley - Willis United Church in Clinton. Following the • ser- vice, the family were en- tertained by Jennifer's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Craig,. at their home. Mrs. Violet Sturgeon, and Mrs. Edna Mote ac- companied the former's. granddaughter • Mr. and Mrs. dary Potter and Merry on a holiday south, where they spent the past 21/2 weeks, returning home on Saturday evening. While away they spent sometime in Knoxville, Tennessee, St. Augustine, Ft. Lauderdale, St. Petersburg, Disney World, Orlando all in Florida and in Nashville, Tennessee on their return. Mr. and Mrs. Donald R. McLeod attended the annual Fishermen's meeting at the Ministry of Natural Resources District. Office in Wingham on Friday. Many of the other Commercial Fishermen in the area at- tended including Ed Siddall and Bob McGraw, Mr. and Mrs. E. Walter Erickson, Andrew, Luanne and Lydia visited friends Sunday afternoop in Port Huron, Mich. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Bell have returned home after a two week Caribbean Cruise. They flew from Toronto to Ft. Lauderdale and left Port Everglades aboard the S.S. Doric for the cruise of islands in the Caribbean. They reported a wonderful and enjoyable holiday. Scouter John Siertsema, assistant cub leader Carol Fisher and Joe Mayman, chairman o1` the Group Committee, attended a District Scouters meeting in ,Lucan on Thursday, March 1. Mrs. Frank Anderson, Science Hill, spent a couple of days last week with her mother, Mrs. Maude Sturgeon, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Sturgeon spent part of the weekend. in Sarnia as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. James E. House. The Houses returned to Bayfield with Bud and Barb and were their guests for the remainder of the weekend. Suzanne Stevens returned home after three weeks in England 'where she attended the International Gift Show. She was on a buying trip to Birmingham, . nd-_Blackpool where she purchased some "out of the ordinary" items for her Ancient Mariner Gift Shop on Main Street. Lydia Erickson entertained three little girls to dinner on Saturday at the Candlelight Restaurant in Goderich: Krista Knights, Cindy Scott and Sheryl Layton, along with sister Luanne and Daddy..and Mom helped Lydia celebrate her sixth birthday. The party returned to Lydiix's horhe where theY enjoyed the traditional birthday cake and ice-cream. Excavation has begun on the new library on Main St. next to the Post Office. Wallis Bros. Construction were awarded the contract at the Edith Smith, Evelene Earl, Jeanne Bennett and Pat Van Patter as readers. Anna Scotchmer read the lesson and Mary Shepherd and Blanche Deeves took up the offering. Jackie Johnston, the Church organist was the organist. The Public Works department of the federal , government has been busy at Bayfield recently, as they are doing remedial work on the east end of the south pier. This Saturday, March 12, starting at 9 a.m., the Novice team are . holding a tour- nament in the Bayfield Arena. This is a one day event and these young fellows are looking for your support.
