Colts open playoffs Friday
The Clinton Colts play host
to the Kincardine Bulldogs
tomorrow night (Fri.) in the
playoff opener with face-off
time scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
The second game of the best -
of -seven series will be played
in Kincardine on Sunday
night at 7 :30 p.m.
The Colts finished in second
place in the Group A of the
Ontario Hockey Intermediate
'C' loop while Kincardine,
who finished out the regular
schedule with three victories
ended in fourth spot.
The other series matches
the first place Port Elgin
Sunocos against the third
-pace Lucknow Lancers.. In
Group -5, the Fergus Flyers
battle the Mitchell Red Devils
while the lowly liarriston
Blues face-off against the
strong Milverton Four -Wheel
Drives.
The Colts will .enter the
playoffs against the Kin-
cardine without one of their
high -scoring wingers. Paul
Kelly, who dressed for 24
games for the Colts will be
sidelined for the series
recovering from a leg injury.
On the other hand the
Bulldogs are flying on a
winning streak and are
receiving. excellent
goaltending from John Bak.
Bak last year played Tier II
Junior "A" Mhockey for, the
North Bay Trappers and this
year is regarded among the
league as the tol..ietminder.

Ramblings from the races

Dapper Dillon regained his
winning form at Greenwood
in Toronto on February 18,
when he was victorious in the
$9,000 Invitation Trot in a
speedy 2:05.1 mile.. He is
owned by the estate of Mary
A. Elliott of Clinton. Already
this year from seven starts,
he has five wins, one second
and one third with earnings
over the $21,000 mark.
Finishing second Was
Spring Air, a five-year-old
horse by Ayres -Spring Vicky,
that had his first lifetime
start at Clinton last year on
July 18 with his former owner
Bruce Volland of Goderich.
Kendee Rip that beat Dapper
Dillon last week had to settle
for third.
In the sixth race at Windsor
on February 15, Shelly Duke,.
owned by Art Maskell of
Goderich was second,while El
Sam 0 finished third for
driver Andy Hardy and
owners Richard Burgess and
Joe Dick of Seaforth.
Bruce Volland of Goderich
had a third with his trotter
Ozark ° Chris on Wednesday
night at the same track.
On February 16 at Flam-
boro, Single Johnnie was first
in 2:11.4 for his owner -
trainer -driver John Muir of
Seaforth. This gives him one
win and two seconds from
three starts in 1977. Another
Seaforth winner was Ron
Williamson with Swinging
Beauty in 2:12.1.
C.D. Dust owned by Frank
and Gerry Johnston of
Goderich had a third place
finish at Windsor on Thur-
slay night.
Friday night at London,
Valleycreek Cleo, a nine-
year-old gelding owned,
, trained and driven by Bill
Caldwell; got his second win
of the year and new record of
2:10.4 in the first race. Prima
Daisy .had a second place
finish in the second race for
owners Roy B. Baynham of
Kippen and John Bettke of
Elmira. Imp Mathers was
third for the, Broken M.
Stables of Goderich.
Dainty Meadow got her
second win of the .year and a
new record of 2:12 in cap-
turing the fourth race with
driver Verdun Vanstone for
his son Brad. She racedagain
on Monday night and finished
third. Bobby Tar, owned by .
Jim Riehl of Goderich, had a
third with Joe McDaid on the
bike. Robbies Girl was also'
third with co-owner Gerry
Roebuck up.
Two horses owned by
Wayne Horner of Brucefield,
Keystone Hartree and
Highland Wish, were second
place finishers at Flamboro
on Saturday night.
At Greenwood the same
night, March Will was a
winner in 2:06.4, while Will
Knight was third in a race
which was timed in 2:03. Both
horses are owned by Ken
Parke of Zurich and John H.
Lester of Forest.
At Windsor' on Saturday
afternoon, Fiame Messinger,
a six-year-old All Aflame -
Debutante Hanover trotter,
was , third for driver Greg
Campbell. His owner Evelyn
Rapson, with her husband
Gord took in the races on
their way home from a
Florida vacation. They also
spent a few days at Delaware,
Ohio attending the Blooded
Horse Sale.
• Shockem All was a surprise
winner in 2:10.4 with Bruce
Volland on the bike.
' Val D'Or won a $3,200 trot
in 2:05.4.for his owners Bruce
Hogg and Wilmer Preszcator.
Saturday afternoon at
London, Tide Delight was
second for • driver Randy
McLean and owner Don
Campbell of Goderich.
Scarlet Walbob, a six -year -
trotter by Scarlet Wave, was
third with Frank Dam up for
owners Walter and Robert
Daer of Goderich.
Watcher's Pride, owned by
David Shamblaw of Kirkton,-
went wire to wire to win the
seventh race in a new record
time of 2:10 with Dave Wall
driving. She now has two wins
and two seconds from four
starts this year.
At London on Monday
night, Verdun Vanstone was
third with Cathy's Hat, as
well as Dainty Meadow. Both
are owned by his son Brad.
Granny • Mathers had a
fourth place finish for the
Broken M. Stables of
Goderich.
Pee wee take series quickly
Last Saturday, February 19
the Clinton Kinsmen pee wees
beat Seaforth 3-1. This game
was the start of the semi-
finals.
Seaforth opened the scoring
at 9:14 of the first period goal
scored by Mclllwain assisted
by Dale.
Clinton came back in the
second , period with a short
handed goal by Jim Fleming
unassisted. This picked the
team • up and Dave Allan
scored at 6:42 of the same
period, assisted by
Stephenson.
There was 25 seconds left in
the game .and Jim Fleming
scored into the empty net
assisted by VanDongen
making the score 3-1 for
Clinton.
Last Monday, February 21,
Clinton Pee Wees travelled to
Seaforth for the secondgame
of the series, winning 6-2.
Clinton opened the scoring
at 11:21 of the first period on
a goal scored by Jim Fleming

Stangs second, openplayoffs

The Clinton Mustangs
clinched • second place Inst
weekend with. a victory over
Walkerton 8-3 on Friday night
and a tie with New Hamburg
2-2 on Sunday night.
The Clinton team and New
Hamburg team are currently .
tied in points with 52 each, but
Clinton has a game In hand if
necessary, and would finish
second automatieally due to
their record of wins and
fosses with New Hamburg.
During the six times the
teams met" this, season,
Clinton had three wins one
loss and two ties.
In last Friday nights' game
against Walkerton, leading
scorers Robbie Heard and
Randy Millar set the pace for
the Stangs with hat trick
performances. Single goals
were fired by Don Gransden
and Pete Thompson. The
teams were tied at one apiece
after the first period and
again at three goals each
after the second period.
A major penalty to
Walkerton's Tim Moran early
in the third period enabled the
Stangs to fire three power-
play goals early in the period.
The Stangs outshot their
opponents by a margin of 58-
30 throughout the game:
Jurgen Hellman had 27 saves
for the.victory.

game in Seaforth, the Clinton
youngsters suffered their
first defeat in W.O.A.A. ac-
tion as Seaforth downed them
5-1.
The locals opened the

period on •a goal by Randy
Marriage and held the lead
until the middle of the third
-period, until Seaforth broke
the game wide open with five
unanswered goals..
The Wil-dex youngsters
have had trouble. scoring

goaltender Derek Cooper, three seconds

On Sunday Feb. 20, the
Bantams also played
Wingham losing 6 - 4.

game was a very close game

Last Friday night, the
Fabian Furniture Atom
houseleague team suc-
cessfully withstood a late
surge of goals from Sifto Salt
to win the Atom houseleague
championship 6-4. - -
For their fine efforts, the
team won the Clinton News -
Record Trophy, by Jim
Fitzgerald, and the C.M.H.A.
atom trophy presented by Bill
Wilson of Goderich.
Randy Marriage led the
Clinton attack with four goals
while singles were fired by
Doug Alexander' and Ricky
Gautreau. .
Coach Ken Dupee will give
out crests for the teatn upon
their arrival.; Congratulations
to all the boys for a well
done.

refereeing which to put it
mildly was "disgusting".
The Mustangs opened the
scoring in the first period on a
goal by Elmira native Mark
King. The Hahns tied the
game in the last minute of
play in the first period and
went ahead early in the
second period.
The Stangs tied it up
midway through the third
period. and, some excellent
goaltending by Clinton's
Dean Ryan and New Ham-
burg's John Sweazy kept the
crowd on, its feet with- all the
end •to end action taking
place.
The Mustangs had a slight
edge on shots on goal as they
outshot their opposition 39-35.
A possible playoff game
will be held at Clinton tonight
