About the only way to stay ahead of the record snowfall this winter was with mechanized
_ snow removal equipment of some sort. But even with a large snow blower, Ward Knox of
Queen Street in Clinton is running out of room for the snow. (News -Record photo)
The drifts were so high last week, that they nearly buried the south wing of Huronview. All
safety exits were keptopen, however. (News -Record photo)

A CNR crew shovelled in three tiers to free six engines
and a snow plow stuck near Holmesville, last Saturday.
Working all night Friday and all day. Saturday, the men
were able to free only four engines. The passage between
Clinton and Goderich was finally opened Monday. Snow
was shovelled fram around the track to the middle of the
enbankment, and then passed onto the top of the huge
mounds of snow lining both sides of the line. Salt trains
from Goderich to Toronto had to be rerouted over the
CPR line until the track was reopened.. (News -Record

"Where's Kippen?" "there it is." This view from the cab of a highway snow plow shows
just how bad the visibility can be on the roads. This picture, taken last Thursday during a
two-hour trip to Hensall and back by a News -Record photographer, shows the foolishness
of driving on the highways when it's blowing. (News -Record photo)

For the dozens of snow clearing equipment drivers, like
Maynard Hymers of Clinton, 1977 will never be forgotten.
Maynard was one of the overworked, tired highway crew
members who worked around the clock to keep the roads
open. (News -Record photo)

Even in the middle of the day.., lights are required in most classrooms at Huron Centennial
Public School in Brucefield, as snow drifts have covered the windows. The staff also had
to contend with a broken water pipe last week, however, the children returned to school
Monday after nearly a two-week holiday. (News -Record photo)

Who says the banks aren't high enough to touch the
telephone 'wires? Chris Zdeb of the News -Record
demonstrates that old-fashioned winters have nothing on
this winter as she easily touches the wire on the
Telephone Road in Goderich Township. Don't . try
touching the hydro lines, however, as it could prove fatal.

This roa . leads to nowhere. In fact, last Wednesday,
