Bathtub Race© returnO, to Listowel vic- toriou °.reports the Listowel Banner. The„'oung People's Society of Listowel's • Christian Reformed Church took top honours .in the race of 43 entrants,'. as well as the award 'for the best decorated tub. The race consists of a series of- relay heats' in which, 16 . members took turns; three pushing and one rider at a time, over the mile -long Course. The crew had a few puzzled looks in crossing the border for the race but had .no trouble. However, one custom's official took down three pages of information describing • the tub and its purpose. The Listowel group will go back for next year's race and are even considering hosting their own race in Canada. St. ' Marys i§ the latest community to experience labour layoffs due to the snowstorm weather. A story in the St. Marys Journal - Argus says 70 hourly -paid employees at the St. Marys Cement Company have been laid off because of snowstorms that have af- fected sales. The 70 men who represent half otthe plant's hourly -paid employees, could be off work for several weeks. Packs of stray dogs have left Seaforth residents afraid to walk on town streets. Last week's Seaforth Expositor relates a story of a woman who was followed by a pack of four dogs as she walked uptown. Police picked up three of the dogs and the owner picked up the fourth. A pack of six dogs running loose near Seaforth Public School was destroyed by Police about two weeks ago, with another five •shot near the Seaforth dump before Christmas. Dashwood's Lutheran Church was the scene for one - of•the strangest weddings the area hs ever seen. According to the Exeter Times - Advocate, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Dougall were married in matching outfits - jeans, after storm weather complicated the wedding ceremony: Judy Miller of RR 1, Dash- wood was transported by van, truck Nand snowmobile to reach the church. The couple managed to th- wart the weather's efforts to put a damper cm the festivities and are off cruising on the Caribbean on their honeymoon. According to another story in the Sen- tinel, Margaret Montgomery was serving gas at the pumps..of her father's garage when some of the fuel splashed back on her clothing.. She wiped the clothing with snow and went back into the garage. The gas fumes from the spill still remained and her clothing burst into flames when she lit a cigarette. Rolling on the garage floor failed to put out the flames, but a similar exercise in the snow outside extinguished the flames and left Margaret without serious injury. While close to 900 people have registered for unem- ployment in the Exeter area, residents in and around Goderich will see 35 new jobs created at Dearborn Steel Tubing Inc.. The Goderich Signal -Star reports. The company has let $200,000 of construction contracts necessitating a building extension and employee expansion. Dearborn Steel was founded in Goderich in 1958 and produces tail pipe assemblies • for Chrysler, Canadian Tire • Corporation, General Motors, British Leyland Motors and Inter- national AP parts. Kincardine's planning board will approach town council. in an unprecedented moveto request pay for board members, according to last week's Kincardine News. The Committee of Adjustment is the only town body which is presently paid for its meetings and board member expenses. The blaze, which burnt a 'three-_ foot hole in the structure's roof, was estimated to have caused $500 damage, says a story in the Wingham Advance -Times.- .
