By Chris Zdeb
Winter in Clinton. It's not as glamorous as April in
Paris, but it certainly is an unforgettable experience. It's
even enough to make a native of the Banana Belt
grudgingly admit that you've never lived through a
winter, real winter, unless you've survived one in Snow -
Belt country.
A winter in Clinton can really expand your vocabulary:
Words like whiteout, snowbound, storm -stayed stranded,
and frostbite, that you never really used before, much
less understood, are household words in this area.
Winter here is also a good lesson in survival. I found
that after the initial passing of hysteria, getting stuck
within the four walls of an apartment for four days can be
endured. It leaves you a little more mentally deranged
than before, but as long as people can't tell the difference
by looking at you, you're alright.
Actually, compared to horrors of driving, being
committed to your -home, was paradise.
My last real attempt to drive through the storm was to
chase the fire truck out to Vanastra early last Thursday
morning. Trying to keep an eye on the flashing red light
slowly pulling away from you in the dark, while
maneuvering two -foot drifts and stalled cars, leads
nowhere, which is exactly wherg I wound up.
I lost sight of the flashing light, failed to maneuver the
snow drifts and stalled in the middle of the highway,
halfway between town and Vanastra.
Luckily, two'hotel patrons, also stuck out there in No -
Man's Land helped to push me out of the snow, and both
cars managed to cripple their way back to town.
Just when all hope of ever getting out to the fire had set
in, along came two Clinton firemen.
Some people who read this column may have gotten the
wrong idea that I don't like firemen. Why if it hadn't been
for Jack Peck, Doug Cantelon and four-wheel drive, I
would probably have never made it out to the fire.
Having to -sit with 'my knees up to my chin to avoid
getting in the way of gear changes, the ride to Vanastra
was one of the most memorable rides I have ever had. In
this case, once was enough.
Yes, it took two attempts but I had finally reached my
destination. Ironically, none of the pictures came out,
due to condition's beyond my control, which makes me
feel sorry that I hadn't just rolled.over and ignored the
call of the fire siren.
I may not be able to take comfort in mild weather here,
but people continually remind me of what aigreat story
this winter will make for my grandchildren. I'm going to .
be up the creek if I ever decide to enter a convent. Just
think all those storm stories and no grandchildren.
Storm stories, however, may turn out to be not half as
interesting as general weather trends that may emerge
as a result of this winter.
When even Sunkist oranges aren't safe from the cold
and snow, and Alaska is warmer than some spots in the
traditional Sunny South, one can only conclude that we're
undergoing a revolution.
I can see it now flying north for the winter and slipping
north to Alaska for some summer sun.
Impossible? Don't laugh, you just might find yourself
booking into the Alaska Hilton for a week or two.
