Last Wednesday in Kin- cardine, _ Robbie Heard, Randy Millar and Grant Sheltoif scored two goals apiece to pace the Mustangs while. Tim McLean, Don Gransden, and Dave (Rocket) Stephenson fired singles. Clinton led the game all the way with a 3-2 first period lead anal a 6-3 second period lead. Mar Nelson replaced Juergen Hellman 'in the Clinton nets for the second and third periods. On Friday night, the Mustangs played host to the New Hamburg Hahns and excited the fans with a close checking, end to end, rushing game. Clinton and New Hamburg. were tied 1-1 after the first period, with Robbie Heard notching his 56th goal of the year. The two teams were tied up again 4-4 after two periods of play with Pete 'Thompson, Ron Sowerby, and Kenny Robison doing the scoring. In the third period, Mark King scored the eventual winning goalhalfway"through the period but in the last minute of play, Robbie Heard scored into an empty net to salt away another Clinton victory. The Mustangs have ' two home games this weekend when , Walkerton Black H.awks come to town on Friday night, and New Hamburg returns again on Sunday night. Ramblings from the races By Lois Gibbings Area horses have been doing exceptionally good recently. Quick Almahurst, a five- year-old horse, by the Tar Heel stallion Golden Money Maker - Queen Wave, won at Greenwood in Toronto on 'January 17. He is owned by Bill Fleming of Clinton. After winning all four career starts for Gord Pullman and Jack Mcllwain of Seaforth, Hilarious Lover, a four-year-old son of Golden Money Maker - Away My Love, was purchased by Ross Nicholson and Dr. Tony Reid - Smith of London. On January 18 at Windsor Raceway with his new trainer -driver Brian Hodgson, he finished second, but he raced again Saturday. afternoon, this time winning in 'a new record time of p, 2:05.3. .-Val D'Or, owned by Bruce Hogg and Wilmer Presz- cator, got his third win in a row this year with Terry Kerr driving. Shelly .Duke, a seven-year- old mare by Newport Duke - Dixie Grattan, was a winner in 2:09 on January ' 18 at Windsor for owner Art Maskell of Goderich. Saturday .night she won again, this time in 2:07.1. El Sam 0 was third with driver Andy Hardy. At Greenwood -on January 19, March Will won the second race in- 2:09.1 for owners Ken Parke of Zurich and John H. Lester of Forest. Friday night at Western Fair Raceway in London, Dainty Meadow, five-year-old Atoms bock Mitchell 9-0 Last Saturday afternoon, the Clinton Wil-dex Atoms defeated the Mitchell Atoms __ by a score of 9-0. It was a great team effort as all the lines were scoring goals in bunches. Randy Marriage scored three, Rick Gautreau and Bobby Dupee '1'ach scored a pair and Scott Kay and Mark Cantelon each fired a single. The Wil -der' Atoms are still undefeated in league play with playoffs starting the first of February. The Atoms travel to Blyth on Friday night for an exhibition game at 7@p.m. . mare by H.A. Meadowland - Dainty Debbie, owned by Brad Vanstone of Goderich, got her first lifetime win in 2:13.2 ,with Verdun Vanstone on the bike. She is a half- sister to Pebbies Girl, winner of over $16,000. Single Johnnie, eight-year- old gelding by Johnnie G - Rosy Dolly, formerly owned by August De Groof, was second in a photo -finish in his first - race since 1975 for owner -driver John Muir of Seaforth. Verdun Vanstone came right back in the second race, repeating his win of a week ago, with Cathy's Hat, also. owned by his son Brad, to take both halves of the daily double. Jason Direct, owned by Len Goldfarb of Montreal, but trained and driven by Randy McLean of Goderich, came up with his first win since 1975 to take the third race. He is a five-year-old horse by Maynard Hanover - Jo Jo Direct with a record of 2:08,, and earnings of over $4,500. Scarlet Walbob was second in the 'tenth race trot for owners Walter and Robert Daer of Goderich with Frank Dam up. Muddy ,Royal, owned by .H.O. Jerry of Goderich finished third at Flamboro on January 21 with driver Robert Jerry. Granny 'blathers. finished third at London on Saturday afternoon for the Broken M. Stables ' of Goderich. Last year she had a standing of 3-4- 5 from 30 starts, a record of 2:08.2 taken at Clinton, and earnings of over $2,000. Valleycreelk Cleo, a nine- year-old gelding by Adios Cleo-Marvester, started out the year with a win for his owner -trainer -driver Bill Caldwell of Clinton. It was'his third win in a row as heended 1976 with two wins. He picked up earnings of over $4,000 last year from 10wins, three seconds and one third from 20 starts. Frank MacDonald of Clinton finished second in the eighth race with Watcher's Pride for owner David Shamblaw of Kirkton. Keystone Hartree won the fourth race at Flamboro on Saturday night while King's ' Greentree finished third in the tenth race. Both horses are iawned by -Wayne Horner of Brucefield. Monday night at London, Ackwin, owned by Gord Rapson, but trained and driven by his 18 yr. old son Bill, was third in the first Pee wees win one Last Tuesday January 18th the Clinton Kinsmen pee wees travelled to Mitchell, losint 4- 2. Mitchell opened the scoring at :34 of the first period. Clinton came back to tie the game up at 10:17 of the second period, on a goal scored by John IVIQrga'n, assisted by Paul Stephenson. In the third period Mitchell came back to go ahead 2-1 scoring at 1:50 of the third period. Jeff Taylor scored for Clinton at 3:03 of the third period assisted by Paul Stephenson tying the game 2- 2. Mitchell came back - and race. In his last seven outings .he has had two wins, three seconds and two third place finishes. Pebbies Girl, a seven-year- old mare by Parker Z- Dainty Debbie, owned by George Feagan and Gerry Roebt.,:k of Goderich was second with the latter driving. In 1976, she had a standing of five wins, nine seconds and six thirds from 38 starts, good for $4,791. Fourth place finishes were taken by Gerry Roebuck with City Boots, Gary Payne with Prima Daisy and Movin N' Groovin, owned by Wayne and Georgina Dupee of Clinton with Wayne driving. Concentrated ' practice is brought tp bear on par- ticularly six club members this week as they prepare for the Great Lakes Competition, 'London this weekend. Club competitions came up rather suddenly this ' year because 'results had to be mailed to interclub much earlier than usual. Our competition took place Sunday Jan 23 8:45-11 a.m. with the following results: junior ladies; Barb Forbes - 1st, Chreyle Beane - 2nd, Janet Shanks -3rd; in- termediate ladies, Karen Schneider -1st, Jane Symons - 2nd, Brenda Dupee-3rd; senior ladies, Kim Marsden- 'st, Karen Schneider -2nd, Peggy Jones -3rd; novice dance pairs; Mary Gibson and Barb Forbes -1st, Tena Strong and Cheryl Beane -2nd. There were not enough competitors in the other categories to make a contest. Medals were not available on Sunday, but will be presented to the winners at a later date. These winners may now compete with Interclub Competition which will be held March 6 in Mitchell. Draw tickets to help finance- a bursary fund from Western Ontario skaters were ,giverf out Saturday to the intermediate and senior skaters by Clinton's ticket chairwoman Rhea Jones. Tickets sell for one dollar for cash prizes of $500, $300, and $200. Mrs. Howard Shanks, a constantly interested skating mother has ,offered to act as National , S'kating Test Chairwoman for the a begin- ners and juniors. John Beane mentioned that this event rarely takes place in Canada • and that we should start thinking about travel plans soon to allow as many Clin- tonians as possible to attend. • The important annual meeting date was set for Wednesday Feb. •23, Clinton arena at 8:30 p.m. —By Audrey Middleton. • A Juveniles finish schedule With four gafnes in eight nights, the Clinton Juveniles completed their regular season's scheldule .with the exception of four post- ponements, which may or may not be played, depending on whether or not they will affect the final league standings. The Clinton team is in the "CC" classifications and at the time of reporting, are thought to be the only "CC" juvenile team in the WOAA. On Saturday January 15th, Mildmay nipped the local boys 4-3 in a game as close as the score indicates. After the weather thwarted % efforts to get to Port Elgin on Sunday January 16, the locals w'i't to Mildmay January 20th and came home with a 3- 3 tie. Last Saturday, Clinton beat Lucknow 7-4 while on Sunday, Goderich broke a 2-2 tie with a minute and a half left in the game, and added an in- surance marlr into the empty Clinton net, as Clin- ton's strategy backfired on a controversial .icing call, and with a few seconds left on the clock, Goderich made it 5-2, Clinton's record for the year, barring the make-up of the postponed games, stands at eight wins, eight losses, and ,,two ties.
