Last week, the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department had
the opportunity of taking on their first female firefighter.
Instead, they followed the traditional route and took on a
mtle. Perhaps they were` afraid of being infiltrated, or
perhaps they were afraid that something like this might
• happen:'
"Well Fifi, welcome to the department. You're the first
woman firefighter we've ever had, but we're sure you'll
fit in well with the team," Chief Fernando says.
"We're • going to meet tonight at the `fire hall for a
practice and it will give you a chance to observe
procedure and take part so you'll know what to, do when
the real thing happens.
"Now, when you hear the fire siren, come down to the"
fire hall as if it is a real fire and we'll take it from there,
he says.
Fifi had just stepped out of the shower when the siren
went and she began a frantic search for warm clothes,
socks, boots, etc.
All dressed, she runs to put on the finishing touches
when she accidentally looks in the mirror.
"Gad! Yellow sweater with green pants! Boy, that
doesn't -match -at-all. Now what. about this brownshirtor
this green shirt or maybe the black shirt or the ..."
Meanwhile back at the fire hall.. .
"The siren's been going for five minutes, dow where's
the new girl," asks Chief Fernando.
• "I just talked to her on the phone and she said she'd be
over as soon as she could get her other false eyelash in
explains Benjie one of the firemen. "She dropped it down
the toilet accidentally and is trying to dry it before
glueing it in."
Another five minutesand one soggy eyelash later... .
"Sorry I'm late, but you see I dropped this. . ."
' "Never mind," says Chief Fernanco, "Come over here
and put on this coat," as he hands her one of the black
numbered slickers..
"But this says number 32" says Fifi.
"So what's the problem?" Chief Fernando asks.
"I'm a 36, I can't wear a 32,"she cries.
"The number has nothing to do with ...uh...well you
know...," Chief Fernando continues, becoming a little
uncomfortable.
"Well all right, but I'm sure everybody will notice that
I'm not a 32," Fifi says.
"Benjie," Chief Fernando yells, "I haven't seen
Bodnick yet." ---.-.
"Don't worry Chief," says Benjie, "We've found
someone to drive the pumper in his place.
"Now, Fifi", says Benjie "just remember, easy on the
'throttle and. .."
"Can you imagine the gall of that guy not moving his
car out of 'the way after I •turned on the siren? ; ; Fifi
fumes.
"I guess you didn't look too closely when you plowed
the car into that wall back there," Benjie sobs, "but it
was parked at the side of the road. There was nobody in
it."
Three crashes later the pumper arrives at a field to
douse a brush fire, ignited -purposely for the practice.','
"All right men and lady," yells Chief Fernando, "get
them hoses out and put out the fire."
.After the initial problem of trying to handle the water
pressure in the hose, Fifi has taken up her position and
begins to water down the flames.
"Hey Mojo!" she calls out to the firefighter standing
next to her, "Can you point the hose in a different
direction? The water's blowing over this way and ruining
my $29.99 hair perm, not to mention my facial, my
clothes, my.. ."
an hour later, the fire is out, the hoses are back in
the pumper, and Fifi is back in the driver's seat for the
ride home.
"Wait, wait," yells Chief Fernando hysterically, as he
comes running to the truck, "you've done so much
tonight Fifi let Benjie drive the truck back to the hall. .
.Please, please let Benjie drive back to the hall," he sobs.
Back at the firehall.. .
"Well Chief Fernando," says Fifi, "I really had a good
time and all the guys were so helpful. You know, I think I
- "
-4111-fitiii with the department. Only, that -32 just -has to
go, and could I get a red coat to match -the pumper, black
just isn't my colour and what about 3 -inch wedge heels on
the boots and ..."

high ozone ca''using "ac- an"
Southwestern Ontario may
get "acid rains" in the future
from having one of the
highest levels of ozone and
PAN, pollution in the world.
From several reports
presented at the Ontario.
College of Agriculture, last
week, it was noted that
photochemical pollution, of
which ozone and
peroxyacetyl (PAN), are the
most important develops
from burning fossil fuels.
Southwestern Ontario is
bordered. by heavily in-
dustrialized areas in the
United States and has Sarnia
to the west and Toronto to the
east. These cities make heavy
use of fossil fuels.
Weather factors also
contribute to draw ozone
across the lakes from such
areas as Cleveland, Buffalo
and Detroit.
In Ontario, it burns stalks
and leaves in crops such as
white beans, soybeans,
cucumbers, grapes, tobacco,
potatoes, tomatoes, pum-
pkins and squash.
Levels of 50 parts per
billion are usually enough to
injure the most sensitive
plants. White bean
leaves react at levels ex-
ceeding 80 parts per billion
and levels six times that
amount have been detected in
Southwestern Ontario.
Ozone pollution was
primarily responsible for
forcing the lucrative white
bean production out of Kent
County and farther north
where it is now centred in
Bruce County.
Scientists have been unable
to counteract the losses,
which have been up to 100 per
cent in some onion crops and
could be 15 to 40 per •cent in
some other crops. • . :
Theprimary ozone
pollution areas ate within
several miles of Lake Erie
and north from Sarnia along
Lake Huron.
"fhe "acid rains," while not
well -researched, probably
would result from a heavy
accumulation of ozone
reacting with certain weather
conditions and falling to the
groundmith the rain.
It is expected the results
would be a harsh burning of
leaves, stalk and fruit on
crops.

In my lob as a travelling
salesman I am expected to,
entertain my clients quite a bit
and my problem is, that I
seem unable to cope with one.
or two drinks without it ob-
viously showing. I might add`
that I don't normally drink,
except on the odd occasion, so
I'm really riot used to it.
This is starting to concern
me so I'm wondering what 1
should do?
The obvious thing is not
what to do, but what NOT to
do. Don't take a drink!
There are hundreds of
thousands of people that don't
drink for the very same-'
reason as you. ..their system ;.
cannot handle alcohol,
regardless of quantity.
It has been proven by many
top executives that alcohol is
NOT necessary to be suc-
cessful...a large number do
not even take one drink!,

Maybe I've lived a sheltered
life, bet 1 am still wondering
what exactly is; a mortgage?
Basically, a mortgage is a
document (under seal) which
effects the transfer of legal
title from the "mortgagor (e.g.
the house buyer) to the
mortgagee who lends the
money.
The house or property is
security for the loan and the
mortgagor can "legally" own
the property when he pays off
the debt — this is, be exer-
cising his right to redeem the
mortgage.
1 have worked with my
employer for over a year and
he still won't give me a paid
vacation.`Urely the govern-
ment has done something
about this sort: of thing.
The Employment Standards
Act ensures that once a person
has worked at least twelve
months, he shall have at least
two weeks off with pay if
entitled to vacation pay
benefits.

Can they legally do this?
The law here'clearly states
