A story in the Goderta Signal -Star says council defeated the motion in a 4-3 vote on the. grounds that it should not take sides on religious matters. Councillor Elsa Hayden, who introduced the motion, said the request -should have come from the Goderich Ministerial Association, rather than from an individual group. Exeter has a star-studded list of speakers lined up for its fourth annual Lions Club Sportsman's Dinner .on February 8. A five gallon can of coal oil was the beginning and end to the village of Dungannon's claim as an oilcapital .So says a story in the -Lucknow Sentinel. According to the story, the Goderich Petroleum Company set up a well on a farm one mile south of the village in 1865, and drilled 10-12 feet down in the ground in hopes of striking oil. Two Dungannon youths slipped dut " to the site one night and dropped five gallons of coal oil down the well. Word of "the strike" spread and- a boom hit the town with taverns, shops arid oil rig going up., The story of the oil can eventually surfaced and the/ boom died down, but not • before Goderich Petroleum' had found salt on the site. Listowel's Deputy fire chief Delford Yost, who was in - in saving the lives - of 18 people in a fire at the Modern .Appliance Building • two weeks ago, suffered a. heart attack on January 3rd, as a direct result of the fire.
