Goderich Town Council
rejected a request from the
Assembly of the Baha'is to
proclaim a World Religion
Day in the town.
A story in the Goderta
Signal -Star says council
defeated the motion in a 4-3
vote on the. grounds that it
should not take sides on
religious matters. Councillor
Elsa Hayden, who introduced
the motion, said the request
-should have come from the
Goderich Ministerial
Association, rather than from
an individual group.

A five gallon can of coal oil
was the beginning and end to
the village of Dungannon's
claim as an oilcapital .So
says a story in the -Lucknow
Sentinel. According to the
story, the Goderich
Petroleum Company set up a
well on a farm one mile south
of the village in 1865, and
drilled 10-12 feet down in the
ground in hopes of striking
oil.
Two Dungannon youths
slipped dut " to the site one
night and dropped five
gallons of coal oil down the
well. Word of "the strike"
spread and- a boom hit the
town with taverns, shops arid
oil rig going up.,
The story of the oil can
eventually surfaced and the/
boom died down, but not
• before Goderich Petroleum'
had found salt on the site.
