Through the other weeklies
The Seaforth Community
Centre renovations are
.almost complete, but the fund
raising campaign is still short
of its goal, according to a
' story in the Seaforth
Expositor.
About $95,000 has been
raised towards the $60,000
needed to match the Wintario
grant. The story says,
however, that the town is not
sure it qualifies for the two -
'one Wintario funding which
went into effect, January 1,
1975. Seaforth had begun
repairs to the arena roof and
general -renovations prior to
that date.
A delegation from the town
went to plead its case in
Toronto, before the Hon.
Robert Welch,,,, but have
received no word as yet from
the government.
A $500,000 fire destroyed a
downtown appliance centre in
"Listowel and left about 10
people homeless, says a story
in last week's Listowel
'Banner. Fast action by a
Listowel police constable and
a visitor at one of the
building's eight apartments,
are credited with saving the
lives of the occupants.
Eighteen people were
evacuated from the building.
Faulty electrical wiring is
suspected to have caused the
fire.
A joint committee made up
of councillors from St. Marys
council, Stratford Council and
Perth County Council has
recommended that Perth's
social . services be
amalgamated under a joint
board of representatives.
The recommendation `will
go . before each municipal
council early in r977, says a
story in the St. Marys
Journal -Argus. Several
different possibilities have
been, explored 'with regard to
administering welfare
payments, counselling and
information services. At
present, provincial
legislation does not allow for
separate municipalities to
am"ei,gamate a particular
function of government, but
James Taylor, 'Minister of
Community' and Social
Services, is prepared to in-
troduce special legislatiion
which would enable the joint
board to become a separate
administrative Nay.
