They elect and corrupt our legislatures and :con- gress. Our highest body, the United States Senate, has become the entrenched camp of monopoly, a House of Lords, a home of millioniares, a gathering of railroad presi- dents and railroad attorneys, and the hire- lings of every iniquity which oppresses the people. Onr political parties•sunply carry out the orders of the barons of robbery, while the people are fed on fair words. Misgovernment has gone on in this land, supplementing the oppression which exists in the old world through kings, emporers and aristocrats, until great numbers of our people are reduced to misery, discontent turbulence. To break down the price of labour at home the enemies of mankind have filled the country with importations of hordes of foreign laborers from the most oppressed portions of Europe ; and these men, taught all their lives to regard any government as tyranny and all prosperity as robbery, have broken out in bloody in- surrection which have shocked and alarmed the whole country. For the first time in free America a considerable portion of our population is to -day held in subjection only by rifles and cannon. The men who, by their insatiable rapacity, have brought about this state of things, are clamouring for a strong government, that is to say, a des- potism. The farmer should never forget that in all despotisms the tiller of the soil is a serf in fact, if not in name. The agri- cultural class has, therefore, the highest interest in preserving the liberties of the whole country. Our foreign -born farmers cannot Desire to see this land go back to the condition of Europe, and he is indeed blind who does not perceive that the whole drift is in that direction. What is our duty in the premises? The alliance numbers to -day in this State 30,000 vetIt is increasing rapidly. By the 2nd c ay of November it will probably con- tain 0,000 votes. This is a force of earn- est, honest men. They are producers ; they seek to oppress no one ; no tears or cries of suffering follow their footsteps ; they are the salt of the earth. This great force wisely wielded is sufficient to control the coming electiou. We trust you will lay down one platform of action : Declare that no railroad officer, or tool, or lobbyist, no agent of the wheat ring infamy, no plun- derer or oppressor of the people, shall be elected to any office in or by this State. Thehmen who rob the people ought not to ask u represent them. Let people govern thee ves. Let this be, as good old Abra- ham Lincoln said, "A government of the people, by the people, and for the people." And there was never greater necessity for throwing the emphasis on that word "for" than now. Too long it has been a govern- ment of the people and by the people for the benefit of every knave who was canning enough to rob the people. It is well known than ten railroads of the North-west have watered their capitalization by the issue of $274,465,034.69 of stock, which does not represent one dollar of cash paid but is simply plunder. Upon this vast sunt there is collected annually $19,000,000 of interest, every dollar of which is wrung from the toil and sweat of an enslaved people. Min- nesota pays a large share of this great sum, $3,327,067.97, annually. Besides this, while the railroads:did not cost, as the rail- road commissioners assure us, $20,000 per mile to build and equip them, they are stocked at from $37,000 to $70,000 per mile, and the people are taxed by excessive rates to pay for millions more of "water." You will be told that you should not interfere in politics, and candidates of the different parties will assure you that they will sup- port your principles. We have heard that for twenty years, and there have been twenty yeaas of oppression and injustice. We have been unable to rectify a single wrong. The machinery of party in this State is in the hands of the weathly classes. They have hundreds of the ablest men of both parties in their pay. They stamp out any man who cannot be controlled by them. Their object is plain. They govern the people to rob the people. A few of the things complained of are :— "First—The excessive freight rates charg- INtORT,ANI'T TI Since the last report there have been ten new cases of Cholera and four deaths at Pester, and four new oases and one death at Trieste.
