Clinton, Listowel series tied

Last Friday evening at
Clinton, the Colts defeated
Listowel Legionaires 9-5 in
the first game of a best . of
three series in the first round
of the OBA.
. Cam MacDonald pitched
the first seven innings in
gaining the decision. Dan
Colquhoun pitched the last
two innings.
Listowel jumped off to a 1-0
lead in -the second, inning -as
the town team homered over
the right field fence. The
Colts struck back with two in
the bottom of the third inning
- to take the lead 2-1. Cam
MacDonald walked, Stew
Mustard singled MacDonald
to second and both runners
moved up on a sacrifice by
Don MacDonald.
Don Bartliff singled,
scoring the two runs. With a
five run outburst .in the fourth
inning. the Colts put the game
out of reach.
Greg Burns opened up the
fourth inning with a double.
Butch Fleet sacrificed Burns
to third. Cam MacDonald
walked for the second time
and Stew Mustard then
walked, filling the base. A
pass ball by the catcher
allowed the first Colt run, to
score in the inning. Don
MacDonald walked, filling
the bases again.
Doc Miller then greeted
Listowel reliever Ross
Morgan with a grand slam
home run over the centre
field fence, to hike the Colt
lead to 7-1.
The Colts added another
run in the sixth on an error, a
single by Cal Fremlin and a
sacrifice fly by Greg Burns to
score Larry Pickett. Back to
back doubles by Butch Fleet
and Cam MacDonald in the
seventh produced the Colts
final run of the game. •
Clinton squirts win
Huron soccer tourney
The Clinton Squirt soccer
club made a fine showing in
the Huron Squirt tournament
they hosted on Saturday.
August 28 and easily overtook
the Seaforth club, who have
been the winners of the
tournament for the past five
years.
In the first game. Seaforth
showed their talents and beat
the Goderich team by a score
of 5-3. Clinton also showed
their skill in a game against
Exeter in which John Scruton
and Troy Faulkner scored the
two goals to give them a shut
out game.
Exeter went on to play
Goderich and quickly put
them out of the finals by a
score of 3-1.
The strong Seaforth and
Clinton teams met in the
playoff game. and Clinton
matched the defending
champions in a close game
which Clinton won on a
penalty kick by John Lavis.
The final sc-ore in the game
was 1-0.
Pee Wee girls
beat Mitchell
The Clinton Pee Wee girls
defeated Mitchell 18-17 in a
tense, exciting softball game
on Tuesday night in Clinton.
The Clinton girls were down
17-14 going into the ninth
inning but managed to puck
up four runts. with :he winning
run being singled in o by
Brenda Dupee.
The Clinton girls now meet
the winners of the Stratford-
Sebr•ingville series.
Listowel fell short as they
picked up two runS in the
seventh and two more in the
ninth to make the final score
The run also produced a big
blow to the Colts as they lost
the services of star pitcher
and shortstop, Stew Mustard
with a fractured ankle. It is
not known when he will be
back in the line-up.
The Colts travelled to
Listowel Monday night, to
play the second game. _
The -game proved to be
disastrous for the Colts as
they went down to a 13-9
trimming. Listowel actually
won the game in the very first
inning .us they scored 10 big
runs.
Steve Cook pitched the last
six innings and 'pitched great
ball for the Colts,
allowing only two unearned
runs.
Even though the Colts were
down 10-0 in the first inning,
they did not give up. They
pecked away at Listowel's
lead with a run in the fifth and
four more runs in the seventh,
but fell short.
Doc Miller hit a long home
run, in the fifth inning, his
fifth homer of the season. Don
Bartiiff and Dave•Fawcett hit
a double and single each.
Butch Fleet gathered two
singles.
Other hits were stroked by
Dan Colquhoun with a double,
Don MacDonald, Paul
Bartlfff and Greg Burns with
singles each.
Even though the Colts lost.
they outhit Listowel 12 to 11.
Next game of the series was
held last night, (Wednesday)
and results we'e not
available. Winner of this
series will play Dundas or
Nanticoke this weekend.

Clinton Housewives in final
Clinton Housewives
defeated the Goderich
Diamonds two games
straight in the best two -out -of -
three semi-finals of the Huron
Central Ladies Softball
League.
Clinton finished the regular
season play in second place
with a ten and four record,
while the Goderich Diamonds
finished in fourth place with
an eight and six record in an
eight team league.
The first game was
scheduled for Thursday.
August 26 in Clinton. The
game was called in the bot-
tom of the third by the um-
pire. Hugh Hodges with the
Diamonds leading eight to
five. because of a power
failure.
The first game was
rescheduled for Friday.
August 27 and Clinton won by
a score of 16 to 9. Both teams
scored three runs in the first
inning and two runs in the
third inning. for a tie ball
game.
Clinton went on to win the
game with five runs in the
bottom of the fourth and six
more in the bottom of the
sixth. Goderich got two runs
in the fifth and two more in
the seventh.
The second game was
played in Goderich on Sunday
afternoon, when the
Housewives defeated the
Diamonds by the score of 28
to 8.
Cleo Colquhoun hit a home
run to start them off and
Clinton got two more runs in
the first inning and one run in
the second. The Diamonds
had their one and only big
inning in the second when
tit struck for seven runs.
Clinton bounced back for four
runs in the third inning to go
ahead 8-7. The Diamonds got
their last run in the bottom of
the third to tie the game.
Clinton scored four more runs
in the fourth and one in the
fifth to tike a lead of 14 to 8.
In the sixth, the
Housewives showed their
power with nine big ones and
ended the scoring in ' the
seventh with five more.
All the Clinton players were
hot at the bat. The winning
pitcher for both games was
Galas Daer.
The Clinton Housewives
consist of the following

Supers1ars nip Clinton
The Goderich Superstars
beat the Clinton Sluggers 16-
14 in ladies' industrial softball
on Monday night in the first
game of the best of three
semi-final.
The second game will be
played here in Clinton tonight
(Thursday) at 9 p.m. with the
final game set for Goderich
on Monday night.
The winner of that series
meets the Clinton Housewives
in the championship final.
