I have worked and made maximum con- tributions to the Canada Pension Plan since it began January 1, 1966. 1 plan to retire on November 30, 1976. Should I apply for a retirement pension now, or can 1 lI crease it by con- tributing, o - tributin until I retire in Novemb'r? (A) Beginning on January 1, 1966, and for a ten-year period, retirement pensions gradually increased , until on Januak-y 1, 1976, maximum pensions, based on a con- tributor's • maximum ear- nings; became payable for the first time. Only under exceptional circumstances would it be to a person's advantage to contribute beyond age 65. For those reasons, it vlouid berto Your advantage to apply, for a retirement, pension prior to the end of . March for a pension ' payable in April. Assuming you did not apply until you retire in November, your 'pension, beginning in December, would be about $154 a month, the same as it would have been in April, had you applied in March. The net effect would be a loss of $154 a month from April to November or 8 x 9154 equalling $1,232, plus your contributions paid during that period.
