Off -ice move delays
some pension cheques
A field officer for Canada
Pension Plan said this week
that his office is attempting to
resolve problems ' they are
'having handling applications
and: inquiries from
beneficiaries in Huron and
Bruce counties.
Glenn Gow, a field officer
for CPP's district office in
Sarnia, said the processing of
checks and new applications
for benefits has been delayed
up to five weeks in some
cases because of an office
move from Kitchener to
Sarnia. He said his office is
working now at sending out
letters to redipients of
Canada Pension, Old Age
Security and Spouses's
Allowance advising them of
the change of location.
Mr. Gow said the change in
office location was due to an
increase in population,
specifically numbers of
retiring individuals. He said
he had been handling about
200 to 225 applications and
inquiries a month in Huron
and Bruce counties alone,
that number being sufficient
to transfer the district office
from Kitchener.
The Sarnia office ; is'
responsible for Bruce. Huron
and Lambton counties. Area
offices are located in
Goderich and Walkerton for
the northern municipalities
and Mr. GO.w said he visits
Goderich every Wednesday to
handle problems here.
The clefts are caused by
the extra handling of in-
coming correspondence.
Beneficiaries are sending
information to the Kitchener
office unaware of the move to
Sarnia and the mail is being
transferred to Sarnia. That
delay added to processing
time and returning of in-
formation or checks has
amounted to five weeks or
more depending on what is
involved. Mr. Gow said that
in the case of a lost check the
beneficiary must write to
CPP sending a statement
proving the check was not
cashed. From there the
district office sends the in-
formation to Ottawa and a
new check is issued and
mailed.
"That delay can amount to
a five week period with no
income for these people and
that is too much,' ' said the
field officer. "We're trying
hard to advise all the
recipients :n our ,area of the -
change of address to cut down
on the delay."
Mr. Gow said the mailing
proobiern can also deprive new
applicants for: Ganada pen-
sion a month's income. He
said people reaching the age
of 65 must apply for the
pension the month they turn
65 or some time in the iwo
months previous.
He explained that. if a
person turns 65 in March they
• must have sent in application
for pension prior to April 1.
He said if they wait until April
the first pension check will
not be issued until May thus
depriving them of April's
check.
"If the application is
postmarked before the
deadline we accept it." said
Mr. Gow: "If it is not then we
can only work on the date we
received it and that means
usually that the applicant is
denied a month'.s check." .
Mr. Gow said that anyone
in the •Huron and Bruce area
wishing information about
Canada Pension, Old Age
Security or Spouse's
Allowance should direct their
correspondence to 546 North
Christina St., Sarnia, Ontario.
