Lotter to the editor • Dear Editor:, On my arrival in Bayfield this summer, 1 enjoyed reading your supplement to the, Clinton News -Record ted June 27, 1976 and titled, e Bayfield Bugle, Souvenir Edition and Official Program of the Bayfield Centennial. Since I have spent nearly every summer in Bayfield since 1948, I was delighted with the historical account of the Village of Bayfield. However, to my dismay, 1 shuddered at the inac- curacies in the article, "Dry Dock on Location of First Marina", page 31A, especially ..t the statement, "....lessers Schram and Ziegler, who did some ex- pansion." The changes that occurred during the ownership of the marina by my father, Mr. Schram and his partner, Mr. Ziegler were considerable, and I . feel that your ..$tatement, "some ex- pansion" needs to be corrected. Allow me at this time to give you the necessary information to make your article correct. When Messers Schram and Ziegler purchased the marina in 1963, it had dockage for • approximately 25 boats, almost all of which were small outboards. There was no full-time attendant assigned to the marina, nor were there any fuel facilities or wash rooms. In the following ten years of their ownership, the marina was expanded to a capacity of 150 boats by creating a West basin as well as, later on, an East basin. They encouraged the development of the Bayfield Yacht Club, offered the club the use of the former Scot- chmer residence for meetings, installed full lighting, and provided power and water outlets for the boats. They maintained a full time attendant, installed washroom facilitie , provided fuel and marine supplies and made many other im- provements. As a result, at the time of the sale of the marina to Dry Dock Ltd., 150 boats were harboured at the Marina as had been the case for" several years prior to the sale. Most of these boats were large sailing vessels and the Yacht Club had a very active racing program. The Marina had an AA rating with the American Yachting Association and was at that time the largest marine facility north of Sarnia. Indeed, it was the marked expansion by , Messers Schram and Ziegler that made the facility attractive to the London "based Dry Dock Marine Centre. The restaurant, then called the Casrne, was also ex- panded and improved. An indoor dining room was added as well as a snack -bar. It became a year round facility. New and modern equipment was supplied to replace the worn out equipnllent which was there at the time of purchase. I hope this brief comment, which just notes some of the expansion of the Bayfield Marina by Messers Schram and Ziegler win make, possible the correction of your article and will add to the accuracy of the•historical account of the growth of Bayfield. Yours truly, Peter C. Schram, M.D. 4201 West 28th Terrace, Topeka, Kansas, 66614.
