STABBED IN TWO PLACES,
and died soon after reaching the beat, It
was jest at night when he returned, and as
I (amid not go`entin search before morning,
Yon oan imagine something cf my anxiety
and how slowly the houre dragged away.
I was off at the firer peep of dawn, taking
the other dog along, Atter a walk of two
miles we Dame spun the boy's dead body.
He had been shot at one of the traps, and
by some one who bad laid hands en him
before the shot was fired. The Menet -had
gone through his heart, and his rifle, knife,'
and other effects had been taken away.
Pinned to his clothing was apiece of paper,
on which was sorawled, ' If yen don't leave
within two days we'll serve you the same 1'
It was the work of some of the renegades
who make that region their permanent
home. I was completely knocked out for
an hour or so, but then I braced. up and
vowed vengeance. Law could not reach
these men. I buried the body on an island
and returned to my boat, feeling pretty cer-
tain that the men who had done ler the boy
would soon pay me a visit,
" I had a rifle, a shot gen, and a navy re-
volver, and the boat house window° were
provided with loop -holed shutters, oaoe
shut ire, no one could get me out unless I
was driven by flames, It was jaat before
noon next day when I heard from the ex-
pected visitors, I was keeping veryshady,
knowing they would shoat me on eight,
when
I SAW JIVE MEN
poling a skiff up the channel. There were
three whites and two blacks, and if my dog
had not given them warning I ehonld cer-
tainly have shot one of them before hailing•
The voice of the dog drove them to cover on
an island about a pistol shot away, and from
there they hailed me and wanted to know
what 1 was going to do. I defied them, and
pretty soon they opened fire on the boat
The only alarm I felt -was that they would
seek to hosed me. In that Daae five to ono
were too many. After they had fi ed about
thirty shots, all of which were harmless to
me, I get a bead on one of the blaoks and
knocked him over. Their pion was then
itbendoned for another. Bythe nee of their
beat they could' work all around me, and,
by and by they had fear men posted at four'
different points, and the, leader called rant
that they would remain there all winter but
that they would have my life, They were
close enough to command some el the loop-
holes, and each one kept himself so well
sheltered that I did not get a shot the whole
afternoon.
" As night Dame down I made ready for a
different attack. I heated the stove boiler
full of water, planed paile bandy, and mode
a barricade across the boat's cabin with fur
titan. Tho boat lay in such a position
that they could only reach me by making
use of their skiff, and then only at the stern.
The bow was in water tee deep to wade in
and too bull of roots and canes for a boat to
pane through. It was near midnight when
tho growling of the dog proved that some
deviltry was afoot.. I dipped out a pail of
boiling water, had the ehetgnn and revolver
handy, and pretty soon I realized that the
quartet had landed on the stern. Of a end'
den I flung the doer open, Two of them
stood there, and, as I
SWISHE u THE WATER OVER THEM,
they went overboard, yelling as if they had
been regularly skinned with a knife. The
two others had gene forward one on each
side of the boat. They had revolvers, and
they turned and opened on me and the
three of ui emptied our ehootore without
any one being harmed. .As I dashed into
the cabin after my shotgun they followed
me. They were so close en me that I could
not get the gun, but had to draw my knife,
It wan dark in there, and the dog took a
hand in, and I expect that little shindy has
never been matched. We out, hacked,

The Indians Disappearing.

'Itched his vlews on the Indian question as
derived from a thorough investigation
made in the West in the eunmer of 85
Tile investigation goes to prove that the
Indians, instead of inereasind in numbers, as
lately reported by the United States 'In -
diem Commissioners, are" wasting and die -
appearing." ' In 1820,11 was estimated by a
government official that there were 425,766
Indians within the boundaries of the United
States,' and to this amount muet be` added
the number of Indians in the territory duce
aanexed" According to the omens taken
jest then, the sum -total of all the Indians
within the proeent boundaries of the Uaited
Statesat that time was 526 592 The last

Dr. Barrows proves that among the ajvillz
ed aq?semi-oivilfzed Indians, the falling off
is 2,000 per annum for the last eighteen
years. Allowing them figures te be true,
the increase, if indeed there be eaoh, of the
savage Indians, who number only 50 000,
could not belanoe the lees among the other
200, 000. He therefore . concludes : the In -

think that with our present elvilizrtion,
the showing should have been better. " I
