Sharp of 105 Queen rct in Clinton has been iing pheasants and ducks ore than 20 years and he more than well-qualifie4 to on their care and its. Over the years he has Sid more than eight arieties of pheasants. 17 pes of quail, and wood and ndarin ducks. He is also a ember of the Huron Fish nd Game Club and was the irector of the Canadian 'rnamental Pheasant and antebird Association for even year. yen though his hobby may Seen' unique and odd to some pop1a, the Pheasant Society alone has a membership of 0. Most of the members me from Canada, however ere are bird enthusiasts in tthe club from the Unjted • tates and there is even a member ITV Japan. Mr. Sharp became a bird fancier in the early 1950's when he bought two Canada geese for the Huron Fish and amClub. His interest in the birds expanded and from there he began his longtime hobby AO bought several pheasants from the Oefmr- tment of Lands and Forests. • As his interest in birdsincreased, increased, so did his need for pens in which to keep his birds. tieing a don- servationist, he searched the area for old posts and rails to build some 10 pens. With the cost of wire, his pens, which would now cost $1,000 to build. only cost him $100 at the time. Even though the birds take hours of care, he still had time. as a member and director of different clubs to drive great .distances in order to attend the monthly meetings at various homes of gamebird enthusiasts: When he was the director of the Gamebird Association he was required to drive 100 miles each month to meetings kr Sitncoe, Ontario. Although some of the feathers and skins of the Golden pheasant may be sold to be used on fish flies, the main purpose of raising the - birds is for enjoyment and for the sale among members and enthusiasts. The Gamebird Association holds three sales a year where club members have a chance to view other pheasants and exchange their birds. Lola of time and illness has forced Mr. Sharp to cut 00101 his number of birds over the Past few Years. Ile has so his quail and pow only raisi ducks and three varieties pheasants. However bus Z birds gill need Care and Mr: Sharp has made sure that his pens are comfortable natural homes for his feathered' friends. Cement ponds, small cedar trees, grass and 01 ° stumps tarnish his pens and supply his birds with a Koine atmosphere. Mr. 'Sharp is pleased to say that he has received few complaints from his neigh- bors about his bird sanctuary in his backyard, despite the fact that last year his flock of ducklings went for a stroll up Queen Street. The fuzzy youngsters have no problem slipping through the one -inch wire mesh and after they have been incubated they must be carefully watched. • Mr. Sharp, however, is considering one -Complaint" he has received from several neighbors in his area. It seems that since he sold his pair of bobwhites, that he has been receiving grievances that his neighbors miss the bird calls and their singing. It looks as if the only way Mr. Sharp will be able to satisfy his "nagging" neighbors is to buy another pair of bob- whites! • Alvin Sharp Pheasant is backyard on has made many fine feathered friends over the past 20 years. This Silver only one of the several varieties of gamebirds that Mr. Sharp keeps in his Queen Street in Clinton.
