Blyth. v.4,-tororia faiski*fifir 1 • Festival play proves] worth of area theatre By eseiiey.MePhee .1 Ike lyews•Ryc•rd • Blyth and area peopip are very fortunate to have an exceptional group of actors and writers in the area for their entertainment. This was clearly indicated last Tuesday evening (July 6) when the Myth Summer Festival held their opening dramatization of Alice Munro's short story. "How I Met My Husband." The play which followed w a very closely to the ori=itlal %tnry tr•11q tkw tearful and touching tale - of a country girl's first love during time of restrictions. Dianne Hawkins, playing the sweet and shy Edie, quickly stole the hearts of her audience as she emerged' from her shell of innocence only to be heart broken by the dashing and free . spirited young. pilot Chris. played by Jim Schaefer. •; The simplicity of country "Hey, that's me," exclaims one woman as they look over old pictures tram past school days at the"back to school day' at the Bayfield Centennial. Left to right are Jackie lohnston of Hayfield. Freda McLeod of Clinton. and Roberta McLeod of Owen Sound. (News -Record photo) SARAH HALE CHAPTER CLINTON 1.0.0.E. For further information contact: MRS. FLORENCE CORRIE 412.7751 lite as -Alice • Munro saw it in the early 1950'ss was clearly depicted through the con- servative yet faticiful eyes of Edge. Edge. who , sees her place as a housewife, is taken in awe by the wonders of a modern bathroom. the glamorous party dresses of her employer and her first cigarette. Miss Hawkins vividly captures the spirit, and brings back memories to many in the audience who went through the romantic yet agonizing period of youth. Although Edie is the true heroine of the play and the only character of any depth. she is almost caught in the shadow by the superb acting of Angela Gei. who portrays the prying neighbour. Loretta Bird. Even though she is a terribly annoying woman. the full house of 250 at the Blyth Memorial Hall found noisy and overcurious ways' quite laughable. Alice Munro. who now lives in Clinton. can incorporate many people and per- sonalities into her writings and the cast of the play took all opportunities and efforts to portray them Lynda Langford. Edie's employer. gives an excellent per- formance of an affected and sophisticated city woman who detests the farm. but must make it her place with her drawl veterinarian husband. However irritating some of the characters seem. the audience affectionately lends a tear Ad some sympathy to Fdie as a heart broken young woman who hopefully awaits to hear 'from her r new found love. Although Edge's life looks to be cpmpletely futile. in the end she mems her real Prince Char:ning and marries, to the relief sitid the delight of the audience. Credit must go not only to the actors, but also to director James Roy. who with his careful handling produced an excellent. play and last. but not least. to Alice Munro for creating such a realistic, bittersweet tale of growing up in the country. For those who have interest in their community. and appreciation of fine -talent. the play will be performed July 16, 20. 24 and 28 at the Blyth Memorial Hall with curtain time at 8:30 p.m. A 01 ' •1 ' . f "1 0.1 • BAYFIELD LIONESS CLUB PENNY SALE To be Drawn At LIONS FROLIC July 23 evening • PRIZES ON DISPLAY AT BAYFIELD TOWN HALL ' -iuly 19-22 from 12noon •4p.m. Nightly Assam-lkrfisM C rvs1iss AeI i1T; , EIGHTH ANNUAL PARKHILL CANOE REGA'TT'A Suwd.y, July ;3 at tM Parkhill Cewseevaliait Aiwa.
