Hutchinson, of Lis- towel, which occurred on the 7th inst., at her father's residence, at the age of 23 years and some months. Deceased was well and favorably known in this section, having taught school here and at Kirkton some few years since. While here the young lady had good health, but after returning to her home she took cold, which, after long standing, developed into that fatal arid much dreaded disease, con- sumption, terminating in death, as above stated. Deceased was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and died strong in the faith and hope of eternal ressurection and of hereafter resting in the presence' of her' Heavenly father. Previous to death she lay on her sick bed bearing the trials with a true Christian fortitude and patience. Her remains were.laid at reest on Friday Iast, followed to the grave by a largeconcource of sorrowing owin friends and. relatives, among the number being many froth Anderson and Kirkton. Seaforth. CALADONIAN GA3fee. --The genies which took place on Friday last, were a grand success. P b f ALTEROATION,--A manuring bee took place on a farm in the 2nd con,, of Usborne, a few days ago, at which many of the. neighbors were present. TTtings;went on admirably the fore part of the ,day, but towards afternoon an altercation arose between the landlord and one of his em,- ployees. For a time both held their part bravely and calmly, until, one of the twat undoubtedly thinking that there was little satisfaction in such refuting, made a dash for his antagonist. A lively tussle ensued in which the landlord fared rather badly, being madethe recipient of two black eyes, together witha disfigured nasal appendage. Kirkton, SUDDEN DEIEISE.-A very sad bereave- ment has ereave-menthas befallen the Taylor family of this village. On Friday last, Mrs. Tay- lor, with her three year old son Horner, went to visit her sister, Mrs. Thompson, residing near McIntyre's Corners. In the evening the little. fellow who had been out playing with other children was missed ancl on a diligent search being made for him was found in the cistern floating on top of the water. When tak- en out life was found to be extinct, he having been there it was thought, about twenty minutes. The cistern contained six feet of water which' had just been put in it the day before, for threshing pur- poses and was covered with lose boards. The corpse was placed in it lovely white coffin and brought home, reaching here early on Saturday morning. The furter- al took place about 9 a. m., Sunday, when all that was mortal' of little Homer was laid peacefully to rest. The coffin was covered with beautiful floral wreaths Placed there by loving hands. The par- ents have the sincere sympathy of all in thier sudden and painful bereavement. Greenway. The trustees of school section. No. 10' sre-talking, of, - putting- the - law, in:- force which compels' parents to send their children to school one hundred and ten days in the year. This fine dry weather is just.the time to make a good score, `especially for small children. A word to the wise is sufficient. Look out for a hard, cold winter. There is a great demand for all kinds of grain by the squirrels. Our merchant shot five a few days ago. He keeps a large stock of water -proof and and felt boots. Men, be wise asthe squir- rel and lay in a good stock early before the cold weather sets in. On Friday last Mr. Archy Bowen, of the 18th con. of Stephen, •was brought before the court to answer to a complaint laid by Mrs. J. McInnes for assault and abusive language. The evidence went to show that his tongue needed bridling and he had to stand under a sentence of a fine of $1 and costs or ten days in Goderich jail. He chose the former and paid the fine and costs. If a large number of peo- ple living in the western part of our coun- try do not mend their ways and bridle their tongues and tempers we wi:l s:oa need a stipendiary magistrate and a large court house. Zurich. OUR VILLsaE.-Although there are some half-dozen different newspapers coming into Zurich every week, and most of thein with items of interest occurring through the week, none of the local cor- respondents have given an account of, or mentioned anything appertaining to the public and business houses in our thriving little village. As the World's Exhibition will take place next week, and I w•k t the Il people in the surrounding towns and country know that there are something like forty-five places of business here, they will have an idea that Zurich is of more importance than they anticipated. Coming into Zurich from the east, the first place of business that comes under' your notice is the Zurich Carding Mills and Cabinet Warehouse, owned by John- ston Brothers ; next is the Huron Hotel, owned by Messrs. Grob & Smith ; on the opposite side is Mr. H. "Wells' Saddle and Harness shop, with Cabinet Warehouse in connection ; on the opposite corner is Messrs. J. & E. Murner's General Store, (successors to Mr. J. X. Wing) ; next in order going west is Mr. E. J. Hardy's Saddle and Harness Shop ; opposite Mr. Hardy's is the "Old Established", Mr. D. Steinback's General Store, with Tail- oring and Millinery Department in coni- iection, Mr•. Ed. Apple having charge of he Tailoritrg, and Miss Muldrew, the Millinery. Going north en the sante: side of street we must not forget our -old time friend, Mr. C. Hess, Watch and Cloel.-maker, Jeweler, Tele- graph Operator and Photographer, of which his son, Master Fred,, the noted 'cyclist, is an able assistant. Crossing Main-st,, and proceeding on the left, we pass under the sign of the Square and Big Scissors, representing Mr. H. Lip- pert, Tailor. Next door is the Post Of- fice, of which Mr. D. S. Faust,General Merchant, is the accommodaing and obliging postmaster. Then on we go to Mr„ L. Thiel's Blacksmith Shop, up to Mr. ,G Millick's Warehouse of Farm Imple- ments. Directing our steps north from here wv get a glimpse. of the Zurich Rol- ler Flour and Grist Mills, Messrs.. Ehnes. & Williams, proprietors. Further on is the Division Court Office, Squire `Zellers being clerk. Opposite the D. C. office is the 'Evangelical M. Church, Rev. s Mr. Maurer, pastor. Going north from. D. Steinback's, is the town 11a11 and fire hall. Further on we conte to P. Sipple, Pump - maker, C F Wagner & Son's, General Store, H Magel's Livery and Exchange' Stables ; Mr. Magel has an agency for farm implements of all kinds. While looking; over our short sketch, we fincl that the Zurich Butchery has been left out, Messrs. Hardy & Johnston, proprie- tors, two jolly fellows, "who go their. rounds three times a week, supplying, the wants of the beef -eating public. Oppo- site Dr. Buchanan's office, is the office and residence of Dr. Doan, V S. Zurich has a fine, large brick schoolhouse, with seating capacity for 150 to 200 scholars. Mr F Cressweller, principal, Miss Sch of- fer, assistant. The Zurichites are mostly Germans, although it is just as common to hear English spoken as the "Deitch". While there are quite a number of good sound Conservatives, in politics, the ma- jority lean to the Grits. The waters of Lake Huron can easily be seen, it being only 3e miles from here ; even boats are often seen passing up. and ,down. The, coming fair takes ' place on Monday and Tuesday; 20th and 21st inst. A grand Amateur Band Competition is in connec- tion. A number of bands have already been entered. Competent judges are coming, acid a satisfactory time is expect- ed. Everybody is welcome to Zurich on show day. The Cornish estate Fullerton, has been throwr into chancery. We are glad to notice that W. J. Clark is ably to bo about, after his long illness. The Canada Statutes for 1886 have been issued, a bound volume of which has been received from Ottawa. Stephen Hynes, of London East, and Jas. Vrooman, of. Granton, were appointed as constables in and for the County of Middle- sex by Judge Davis Saturday.
