According; to 3ames Scott's
book, "The Settle tent . of Ifuron
Co." the Canada Company was
very slow about building bridges
and making good roads.
At Eayf&eld the teams forded
the river -Don Mac 0114e said his
grandfather died of pouemoitta
from being soaked whale crossing
the river, A chin;. Was built for the
mills and people were able to
cross: on it, except when it was
damaged by floods. It was
wished out in 1841 and rebuilt-
anddamaged. in tater floods.
A Clinton area historian. R.
Thompson, said that he had been
told that a bridge was built at
Bayfield itt 18:0. Malcolm
Cameron being involved in its
construction, but others say that
ant to village
there was one even earlier than
that -in 1850 -gust below the dam. A
wooden bridge built in 1878
consisted of two span of Howe
Truss 1.. 3. Brace. Wingham, was
contractor.
Frank Keegan claimed that in
the early days, there was a
bridge from .the Middleton
property on the north side across
to the south side and the sketch in
it Mons Atlas does give filet
impression but there
are so many other inaccuracies
in that sketch that one would
hesitate to place much faith in it.
The covered wooden bridges
(as the one at Montrose) lasted
any length of time -the uncovered
ones soon rotted -and then another
would be butt nearby, usually
every ten or fifteen years. Pic-
tures §bow one spanning the river
where the iron bridge was built
later and two different types la -
little further down leading to the
north bank just west of the
position of the River Colony
Cottages now. The James
Stonehouse diary speaks of a new
bridge being finished October 12,
1893. and of it being damaged in a
river break un.

The. old ntill stead- beside the dant on tete Hayfield River. Before a bridge was built, people used to
cross' the river on the dam. The water dammed back around 1880 and spread over the flats creating
the Mill Pond.

In 1900 a wooden bridge crossed the river. The McLeod house is
situated on the flats and on the hill in the background, the
Moorhouse home or "Holmewood". It was built by T.J.
Moorhouse in 1883.
