Dr Richard:Stattbury was a well
respected man and long time
practising Bayfield physician.

some time and then went to live
with his family in the U.S.
Nora Ferguson operated a
boarding house there for some
years and on warm evenings.

MT. and Mrs. Quarrie. the next
owners for some years sold to Mr.
and .Mrs. Robert Roddick who
had an antique shop there. They
were the ones who gave it the
name "Century House".
They sold it to Professor
Thompson of London who is the
present owner.
"Shangri-la"
Bayfield Terrace
Shangri-la was built by -Wm.
Jowett in 1898. the brick work
costing the great sum of 31200. It
has at various times been oc-
cupied by Dr. and Mrs. Smith.
Mr. and Mrs.' Walter Bough and
Mr. and Mrs. Stevens and Mrs.
Maud(Ferguson) Rhynas. It was
she who gave it the name
Shangri-la.
The present owners are Mr.
and Mrs. R. Symons who bought
it in 1958.
Bell Home
The Bell home on Bayfield
Terrace next to the Hutwas built
in two parts, the first over 100
years ago. Mary Simpson kept a
boarding house there for years
around the turn of the centui y.
Many interesting people stayed
there, especially in the summer.
One was the MacMillan family
whose son.(theri about nine years
of age) became the famous
musician, Sir Ernest MacMillan.
(At that time he loved to get into
the garden and eat cucumbers!)
The west section was added
when Mrs. MacDougall owned it.
Many Bayfield .people ha'Ve had, a
room or an apartment there.
Mrs. Chas. Bell. the present
owner. keeps it in excellent
condition.
Stanbury mouse nearly
same as when constructed
The - Stanbury .H,osise on the
west side of Clan Gregor Square
is also over 100 years old. It was
built by the . well-known
physician Dr. Stanbury. He also
bruit the house next door, having
enough bricks on hand for the two
places. Dr. and Mrs. Stanbury
were active in community life
here in the Late 1800's.
Mr. Archie Galbraith was the
next owner; living there alone for
some years. and Mr. and Mrs.
Wm. Stinson followed him when
they retired from their farm.
Mrs. Kelly made it into a nursing
"Fairlawn"
Fairlawn is a well kept white
frame house on the corner of
Main and Colina Streets with a
Large lot. mostly in flowers and
gardens. It is believed to have
been build pay Louis Durand.
There has been a succession of
owners, those remembered by
people _today being Mrs. Cowie,
Mr. , and Mrs. Wightman.(it was
they that made many im-
provements and called it
Fairlawn), and Miss Savage. Mr.
and Mrs. R.C. Moore are the
present owners.
"Will Ferguson House"
The "Will Ferguson House" on
tot 169 at the corner of Main and
Colina Streets is so called by the
Hayfield people because the
Fergusons lived there for some
time. The owner in 1858 was
James Davidson.
The Misses Watson of Windsor
owned it in the 1960's and early
1970's producing many beautiful
woven articles which were sold in
local stores. Mr. Dowler is the
present owner.

and Mrs. Maloney lived there.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman F.
Cooper of Mount Clements
Michigan. are the present
owners.
Bay windows and the peak made the
Dr. Stanbury home on Clan Gregor
Square a gracious looking, house.
Ironwork that once decorated the
top of the peak is the only thing
that has been changed with this
home. The doctor Uved there for
many years around the late 1800's.
