Struthers Carding -Woollen MW
was where the hardware store is
now on the corner of Clan Gregor
Square and west Howard Si. so
we know that is an old building.
This was listed in the 1863-64
Directory.
June 13, 1883• newspaper item
states. "Mr. England formerly, of
Guelph, has leased the woollen
factory here and is adding a lot of
new machinery to that already
the mill and will run an extensive
business." I
December 12. 1883. "The
woollen mill is in full blast".
An older item of June 24, 1881

.Sawmills
In 1836, according to the 1878
Atlas of H. Belch n & Co.. Wm.
Allen of Guelph ,t ^ected a small
sawmill on the riv r bank. A dam
had been built a efore the death of
Baron de Tuyli.
These mills and water rights
are subsequently listed as being
under the ownershiti of Vitro:
Piper and J. McDonald 1849,
Charles Vanstone ,1866. Richard
and James Vanstone.'and in 1868
Ishmael Fillion and James
Thomson.
The Thomsons built a brick
house on the river flats north of
the mill and lived in it until. when
the dam broke due to spring
floods. the river began eroding
the bank and. in a spring break-
up. flooded the home. Then Mr.
Thomson bought the R.H.
Gairdner home on the high north
bank of the river.
A news item of March 14, 1890
states: "Thomson's grist and
sawmill is, booming." It had been
destroyed by fire in 1887 but re -
bunt in f, according to the
New Era.
Augu. st 5,1904: "On Wedneslday
night Ore broke out In Mr.
Thomson's sawmill and had
eonstrmed the powerhousellefore—
it was discovered but was ex' ".
tinguished before further
damage was done,"
Lewis Thomson(son of Jar es)
joined his father in the work and
at one time had the sawmill
machinery moved up on the 4th
Concession but, later brought it
back and incorporated it Into the
flour min which had been moved
a little farther down the river in
1903..This Is where most of us
living today remember as the
location of Thomson's Mill. It lay
idle for some time and then
Menno D. Steckle bought it in
1920, moving it to his farm on the
Bronson Line.
James Donaldson operated a
sawmill in the former Drillshed,
a building on the bank about
opposite "Clifton" and where No.
21 Hwy. begins its descent to the
bridge. It had been used for
drilling troops to repel the Fenian
Raids; then, when that scare was
over, had been a skating rink.
October 7. 1898: "Mr.
Donaldson sold his sawmill and
electric light plant to Mr. Cantin
of St, Joseph". William and John
Jowett bought the mill and plant
in 1900 and sold to William
Mustard in 1902.
Clinton New Era. September 9,
1904 - "Our village presents a
somewhat dull aspect at present
owing to the recent fire; some
efforts are being made to per-
suade Mr. Mustard to rebuild and
resume operations which will
mean much to Bayfield from a
business standpoint."
Clinton New Era: Feb. 26, 1897 -
"Goldthorpe and Donaldson have
commenced operations in town.
They are making maple blocks
for sale. Jas. Dean of Goderich
will be head sawyer while the
season lasts."
