The Huron Hewn -Record of
Feb. 18, 1881, stated, "Our
Council should be called 'the
encyclical Council' as it takes
the taverns 'in rotation to sit in.
having no settled residence of its
own. The men that compose this
compact- body are not given to
drink by any means but rather
the other way."
The Division Court also
"roamed". the February
meeting of that year being in
Barker's Hall. Hayfield
However. on Oct. 2?. 1881, we
find that the framework of the
much -talked -of town hall "is now
erected and workmen are rapidly
completing it." .
But not everyone was in
agreement over its location as we
' find an item Nov. 11. 1881 - "The
Bayfield Council is on an
economical dodge. They put the
town hall on a street before -they -
would buy a lot for it." and Dec.
2nd. "Is it lawful for Bayfield
Coit to erect a town hall'on the
4
a
Queen'S highway and block up
the road?"
In spite of his criticisms, the
writer had to admit"The gallery
is a grand affair." On Jan. 12.
1882, all was praise - "The con-
cert under the auspices of the
Village Council on opening of the
new town hall was a complete
success. intellectually. morally..
and financially. The fact that
none of the performers were
professionals and all belonging to
the village, yet that they could
entertain such an intelligent
audience for over WA hours in the
perfect order that was
manifested by all is sufficient
proof ,that it was well received."
In reference to the building
itself the writer goes on, "The
building is very comfortable and
easy to sing or speak in. The hall
is completed except for the tower
which' remains closed until
siring. It supplied a long -felt
want in.Bayf field. The contractor
was Ishmael Filiion of Bayfield
dates back to 1881
and a better mechanic never
lifted a hammer.''
The question of its location
cane up over and aver again and
the decision was fipally made to
move it. From the minute books
of the Council we take the
'following items:
"May 1,- 1920 - Purchase of
Spackman lots bordering on
Square from Dr. Metcalf to place
Town Hall on. Price 5350.
"Dec. 4. 1920 - Work and
materials for Town Hall moving.
Accepted Fred Hunt's tender for
furnace for Hall at 5269 to be put
in Hall same as sketch and
tender.
"Dec. 27. 1920 - Moving of Town
Hall. Meeting again there.
"May 1. 1921 - Lock-up built in
Town Hall.
The old Town Hall is now used as a meeting place for various
groups in Bayfield. (.photo by Milvena Erickson).
"Feb. 3. 1922 - Purchased stove
for Town Hall for 82."
In 1893 Messrs. Day and Erwin
had painted the building and on
Aug.4th item of that year tells us
that the inside was finished hi.
heliotrope! It also suggested that
new stage curtains were needed.
It would have been, in a way. a
good -Centennial project to have
had the Hall restored to its for-
mer appearance on the outside
but the asbestos shingles do make
it easier to heat and also save on
paint. There is a clean-up job
going on inside and it is to be the
focal point for Centennial days
July 1-4 with registration there
each day - and also the in-
formation centre and pictorial
displays.
So our Town Hall is moving into
its second century of usefulness
to the Community.
August 28, 1881
Some weeks ago the
correspondent of the News -
Record. fearing no doubt the fatal
condition of the steps in front of
the River Hotel, made a
suggestion to the worthy "sires"
of the village to have them (the
steps) saved from corruption.
Nearby this regenerated
structured are thousands of
degenerate vegetation growing in
all the luxuriance of an
uninhabited southern clime.
Probably a' word from the Record
would aid in removing these
lingering relics of `"Indian
habittation.
We wish to congratulate the Village of
Bayfield on their Centenary and wish that
the next 100 years will give continued
growth and prosperity. --J
