Social notes
Mr. Joseph Storey is now a
patient in Victoria hospital,
London where he had surgery
and is now progressing
nicely. We all wish him well.
Cou n Iry Pksyhouw progra Il
altered for financial rNasori,
James Murphy. Huron
Country Playhouse Artistic
Director. has announced an
altered Playbill for the 1976
season. The changes were
made when the Playhouse
learned itsA„grant application
to the Canada Council has not
been successful.
"The most disappointing
thing", said Murphy. "is the
cancelling of the premiere of
Warren Graves' new play
Madame Chairman".
Having commissioned the
Edmonton author to write it
for presentation during the
5th Anniversary season, the
Playhouse is now in the
position of having to cancel
the production.
"The presentation of a
brand new play is expensive.
Mainly because it requires
more rehearsal time than we
can now afford. It's a matter
of cutting frills from a
program that has none," he
stated.
The other cancellation is
the lavish Broadway musical,
1776. which was to be the
Playhouse tribute to the U.S.
Bicentennial. 1776 was to
open the season, and play
during the July 4th week. It
has many bookings already.
The Playhouse 5th
Anniversary Season was
chosen to celebrate Canada
and ' its heritage in this
Olympic year. It was to. in-
clude a musical and a comedy
each from Canada. England.
and France. and „two ad-
ditional American works in
honor of the Bicentennial.
"We don't wish to disap-
point our audiences" said
Murphy. ''They've stuck with
us through other rough times,
five years of them in fact, and
we won't let them down now."
You're a Good Man Charlie
Brown will replace 1776 as the
American: musical. This
delightful story of Lucy,
Snoopy, Charlie Brown and
all the Peanuts gang will open
the season June 30 and play to
July,3.
Madame Chairman, as the
Canadian comedy offering,
has been replaced by another
play by the same author. Mr.
Murphy calls The Mumberly
inheritance a "good-time
melodrama". and feels sure
it will be most popular this
season. Its run is , July 21 -
July 24.
Another cutback* this year
arising from lack of support
is the Playhouse five -city
touring program instituted
last seasfn. It has been
reduced to only Ante per-
fnrmance each week in Owen
Sound or Meaford,
